CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The second annual Hot Dog Eating Contest at the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta highlighted day two of the Capital City’s biggest summer event.

William Simmons, 33, from St. Albans took the crown at the contest by eating nineteen hotdogs in ten minutes.

Contestants were timed at ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. Afterward, the event organizers waited one minute for the contestants to “hold the hot dogs in.” Then, the organizers counted the hot dogs and declared Simmons the winner.

“I thought I was getting destroyed. Everyone was cheering for me in the middle. I was the quiet guy on the side. There was talk of someone who had eighteen and I knew I passed that.”

When asked if he had ever eaten nineteen hotdogs in one sitting before, Simmons said, “Absolutely not.”

Simmons won $100 in cash and a large metal trophy.

The second night of the Regatta also features the Fab Four, a Beatles cover band, and a fireworks show. For a full schedule of Regatta events, check out their website .
