CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The Charleston community is mourning the passing of a former city leader.

City of Charleston officials announced Wednesday that former city council member Robert Sheets has passed away. Sheets served on the city council for three terms between 2007 and 2022.

“Through his fearless leadership, Council Member Sheets as left an incredible mark on our community,” Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin said in part. “As we honor his memory and legacy, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring Charleston continues to be a welcome and inclusive community for all, and we extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all who knew and loved him.”

Goodwin says during his time on the council, Sheets made significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, including founding the city’s annual Pride Picnic, serving as president of the local PrimeTimers chapter and his continued advocacy for LGBTQ+ residents.

Sheets also previously served as vice president of the Living AIDS Memorial Garden, the organization said in a tribute to the former council member. They say he was also a member of the Kanawha County Democratic Executive Committee and a former manager of the Tap Room.
