    Charleston Distance Run mourns founding member

    CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Charleston Distance Run is mourning the passing of one of its founders.

    The organization announced that Sherman Yale “Nemo” Nearman, 98, has passed away. He served as a founder of the CDR Committee and as a former race director.

    “Nemo made significant contributions, including introducing the 5K and walking events. His legacy has expanded the CDR to a wider community of athletes. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time,” the organization says.

    According to his obituary , Nearman graduated from Charleston High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy. He was honorably discharged three years later as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. He played college basketball at UNC Chapel Hill, and continued playing basketball throughout is life, including leading teams to win in the National Senior Games. He even served as an advisor to Chile’s Olympic basketball team, according to his obituary.

    Nearman worked as a school teacher in California and was also employed as a radio station ad and furniture salesman. He went on to own a mail sorting business and worked as a general manager for the Charleston Gunners professional basketball team. His resume also included service as the City of Charleston Consumer Protection Director and the Rebuilding Together director, according to his obituary.

    Arrangements are being made by Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, WV. Nearman’s services are set for Thursday at the B’nai Jacob Synagogue in Charleston.
