CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin and The Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted an Olympic Cycling watch party Saturday morning at Adelphia Sports Bar and Grille.

Cycling fans filed in to cheer on some of their favorite cyclists that qualified for the Time Trial Olympic event by winning the 2024 U.S.A. Cycling Pro Road National Championships Time Trials in Charleston earlier this year.

The doors opened at 8 a.m., but there were plenty of people who got up bright and early to cheer on Taylor Knibb and Brandon McNulty in their race for the gold.

Adelphia had a cash bar featuring classic early morning drinks like mimosas, bloody mary’s and Irish coffee. They also offered complementary breakfast sandwiches and pastries.

13 News spoke with one cycling fan who rode his bike to the sports bar to cheer on Team U.S.A.

“Anything that we can do to help bring the community together, to get people into local businesses. I really appreciate the visitors bureau and Adelphia doing what they’re doing here this morning. It’s really exciting,” cycling fan Rory Perry said.

Knibb was the first cyclist off the block for the Women’s Time Trial Event and was off to a strong start. But due to wet road conditions, she suffered a fall that ended up costing her a spot on the podium. Knibb finished in 19th place with a time of 43:03.06.

McNulty finished with a time of 37:16.60, which was good enough for a 5th place finish, just missing out on a medal.
