Unraveling The Chaos: East Babcock And South Wallace Intersection Woes In Bozeman
If you frequent the east side of downtown Bozeman, you've no doubt encountered drivers blundering their way through this odd intersection at East Babcock and South Wallace. It's a disaster. I mean, it wouldn't be if everybody just drove through it correctly. But we don't drive through this intersection correctly. Hardly ever. Native Dance Commemorates Red Lodge Battle
Timothy McCleary, the Dean of Academics at the Little Big Horn College on the Crow Reservation, spoke about the recent performance there of the Shoshone Dance: “I’m receiving questions about the meaning of the Shoshone Dance. My understanding is that it represents when the war leader Red Bear revenged the massacre of the Apsáalooke (Crow) camp at Red Lodge, known in Bíiluukaa as Ashhíshalahaawiio (Where The Red Lodge Was Wiped Out). There were two brothers who were camp leaders and they had their camps together. The older brother’s tipi was painted red and the younger’s yellow. The Shoshone war leader Splintered End attacked the camps with his warriors and all were killed, including men, women and children. A total annihilation. Their mother took a pipe to the River Crow war leader Red Bear and asked him to revenge the deaths. He agreed. When they found Splintered Ends camp west of Cody, Wyoming along the Stinking River, where the nearby hills are called Káalisisshe (Old Woman’s Work Bag), he told his men the one who strikes the lodge furthest up river and furthest down river will have the war honors of the day. The attack was successful. Splintered End and his men were killed.”
