Charges are now pending in Monday night’s tragic accident on Old Kings Highway. Virginia State Police and local fire departments have provided more details into what happened and who was involved at the scene.
The three-vehicle wreck took place Monday night at 10:07 p.m. in the 3100 block of Old Kings Highway, just over the border in Charlotte County. According to VSP Public Relations Manager Matt Demlein, a logging truck driven by a Farmville man was pulling out from a private drive, looking to make a left turn and head north on the road. This was during the part of the night where fog was extremely thick in the area.
As the truck was pulling out, Demlein said a 2013 Toyota Scion traveling south on Old Kings Highway didn’t see the vehicle in time to stop, striking the truck’s trailer. A 1997 Cadillac Deville, which had been traveling behind the Toyota, then struck the rear of the Scion.
Keysville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Lynn Duffey said his department was called out to respond, with Meherrin Company 5 also asked to assist, due to the nature of the call.
“Engine 7 arrived simultaneously with Charlotte County Rescue to find 6 patients, with three still in the vehicles,” Duffey wrote in a post on the department’s Facebook page. “Due to the extent of injuries and limited access, members from all three agencies worked aggressively and flawlessly to evaluate and treat the patients, which is the ultimate goal.”
He added that Company 7 used their extrication tools to remove the roof of one vehicle and got one patient out quickly. Other agencies continued to evaluate and treat the remaining patients, who had sustained critical injuries.
One dead, others injured
According to Demlein, an 11-year-old boy died in the crash. The boy had been a backseat passenger in the Scion. Two other passengers in the car, a nine-year-old boy and 30-year-old Devon Parrish, both suffered serious injuries, as did the driver, 31-year-old Jamie D. Mosley of Stanley. Demlein said the State Police investigation found that none of the people in the Scion were wearing seatbelts.
A passenger in the Deville, 49-year-old Stephan Robertson, suffered serious injuries in the crash. The Deville’s driver, 45-year-old Keysville resident Tyrone Morton, suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts, Demlein said.
The driver of the truck, meanwhile, 43-year-old Farmville resident Terry T. Johnson, was not injured.
As the victim who died attended Central Middle School, the school sent out a message to all parents of current students on Tuesday. They confirmed a student had died and offered support if any children needed grief counseling as a result of the situation.
In his post, Duffey said it was a tough situation for all involved.
“This was a tough scene for all agencies involved, as a young soul was lost but not due to lack of effort on anyone’s part,” Duffey said. “Unfortunately, we don’t always get the outcome that we’re fighting for.”
He also offered thanks to all agencies who responded to the accident.
“It really is a huge relief when you know you have reliable help from rescue, fire, law enforcement, and emergency communications personnel,” Duffey said.
That list of responding agencies included Keysville Volunteer Fire Department, Drakes Branch Volunteer Fire Department, Meherrin Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Charlotte County Rescue Squad, Chase City Rescue Squad, Virginia State Police, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Department and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Charges coming in Old Kings Highway wreck
As for the investigation, Demlein said people should expect to see something happen soon.
“Charges are pending (and) the crash remains under investigation,” Demlein said.
