NORTH PORT — Local families in need have options when it comes to food this summer.

Various locations in Charlotte, DeSoto and Sarasota counties are giving a helping hand to children out of school.

The Thurston family spoke to The Daily Sun about why the programs are crucial.

Dominique Thurston, a mother of three, was at the North Port Public Library on Friday. It is one of All Faiths Food Bank’s many hot food sites.

She said such assistance is helpful, especially in light of how costly groceries have become.

Her older children Carter and Kensley are off school for the summer, and Kyla, her youngest, is just about to start kindergarten in the coming months.

Dominique Thurston appreciates the program while Carter and Kensley relish the opportunity to eat and get out of the house, playing around in public.

All Faiths Food Bank helps facilitate giveaways in Sarasota and DeSoto counties.

“We are thrilled to partner with All Faiths Food Bank to provide essential nutrition to our community during the summer months,” Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources Director Renee DiPilato said.

“This collaboration ensures that families visiting our libraries have access to healthy snacks and meals, fostering both lifelong learning and healthy living,” she said.

Charlotte County has its fair share of helping hands as well.

Charlotte County Public Schools has its annual Summer Feeding Program running through July 31.

Champ’s on Wheels will also offer free food to children 18 and under.

Read and Feed at Port Charlotte Library is available as well, for children 18 and under.
