For all the good Dave Canales promised the Carolina Panthers in his introductory press conference, there is still the worry of how he will fair as Bryce Young's head coach.

Young, who had an awful rookie season, is looking to build off a low 2023. Canales explained he is excited to work with Young, but it won't always be easy.

“I think there are certain challenges,” Canales said of coaching shorter quarterbacks.

"I will say that there are just certain things you can do to help. There are ways to find what that quarterback’s comfortable seeing.

“You got a guy like Drew Brees, who’s about my height, which is still short in terms of a 6-foot-7 tackle. So whether you’re 5-11 or whether you’re 6-1, you can’t see over any of the linemen. So, there’s an approach to it.”

Yes, there is a recipe for how to win with short quarterbacks. But at 5-foot-10, Young is exceptionally small. He also doesn't possess unworldly arm strength or precision accuracy.

What made Young special coming out of Alabama was his intangibles. Now, those same intangibles haven't been seen at the NFL level. It will be up to Canales to get the most out of him. It's good the new-look head coach admitted to be excited by the challenge.

In essence, all isn't lost with Young. There is more that can be achieved. Canales was hired to be the man that got the most out of him. However, the Panthers can't afford to have Canales mess everything up.

If he can keep Tepper out of his head, he should make a good coach.
