Canales, 42, takes charge of the Panthers after they finished the 2023 NFL season with a league-worst two wins.

It marked Carolina's sixth straight campaign with a losing record and the team's worst performance since 2010.

Key, 52, brought up the franchise's struggles during Thursday's NFL Honors gala while discussing Taylor Swift's 9,000-mile trip from Japan to attend Super Bowl LVIII.

"My understanding is that Taylor Swift is in Tokyo right now," the host joked.

"The only people farther from the Super Bowl are the Carolina Panthers."

Canales took notice of the remark and quoted it on X later that night.

The Panthers head coach added thinking face and bookmark emojis to his post, indicating he won't quickly forget about the quip.

And fans lauded Carolina's new boss for keeping the receipts.

"You’ll show em," one wrote on X.

    "Love this energy," another added.

"Actions speak loudest… let’s go coach!" a third said.

"Yessir that’s my coach!" one wrote.

Key cracked jokes about numerous NFL personalities during the event, including Peyton Manning and Bill Belichick.

In another Swift-inspired dig, he laughed at Belichick's record in his last season with the New England Patriots.

"Who would've thought that Taylor Swift would've gone to more playoff games than Bill Belichick?" Kay asked.
