A 17-year-old is in the custody of juvenile justice after law enforcement said he shot and critically injured another teenager while the two were inside a vehicle Thursday afternoon near Patterson Springs.

Capt. John Humphries with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office said the shooting took place around 3 p.m. near Kim Drive and Shaw Street.

He said there were at least three people in the car at the time and some type of altercation took place which allegedly led to the 17-year-old pulling out a gun and shooting 18-year-old Kenneth Patterson in the neck. The shooter then got out of the car, Humphries said, and he was later found and taken into custody.

Humphries said the driver of the car took the injured man to Atrium Health - Cleveland where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

Humphries said the shooter, whose name was not released because of his age, is from Cleveland County and Patterson is from Charlotte.

Hope he is tried as an adult and gets 30+ years in prison.

Parents should be held accountable for their children(s) bad behaviors. How is it the parents don’t know their children are carrying a gun? Parents should know everything about their children’s friends and whereabouts and curfew at all times. Parents should be nosy in their children’s lives at all times until they’re of legal age.
