Copperhead Social Club is a new neighborhood bar opening in the former Pepperbox Doughnuts spot on North Davidson.

Why it matters: Its owners, all born and raised in Charlotte, say they want to do their part to retain the city's local charm despite its increasing commercialization and growth .

What they're saying: " We desire to bring cool things to our city — helmed by locals who want to retain some of that old Charlotte," says Alex Beebe, co-owner of Copperhead Social Club.

Context: Pepperbox Doughnuts closed its NoDa location on May 31, its owners announced on Instagram , while simultaneously hinting at their next venture. Its owners told The Observer that the closure was due to high overhead costs.

Between the lines: Beebe, who previously worked at popular spots Soul Gastrolounge and Customshop, will lead the kitchen and overall vision for Copperhead Social Club. He's joined by co-owner Julian Billings , whose cocktails you might've tried at Merchant & Trade , Tattoo or Nuvole . The third owner, Forrest Hamilton, will oversee accounting and HR.

"Social club to us means a place where everyone can come to gather, have a drink, relax and be among friends." Alex Beebe, co-owner of Copperhead Social Club

The vibe: Copperhead Social Club will be casual and offer affordable food and drinks, Beebe tells Axios.

    • Its menu will be simple, with burgers, beer and "unpretentious mixed drinks," he adds.
    • Beebe says he doesn't want to label Copperhead as a "sports bar" — but the lifelong soccer fan says he hopes it'll be a destination for Charlotte FC fans.
    • At about 1,600 square feet, it'll seat 40 people inside and 20 on its new all-season outdoor patio.

What's next: Copperhead's opening date is still TBD but Beebe says he hopes to open by late July.

    • When it does, its hours of operation will be 11am-2am Friday and Saturday, 11am-midnight all other days, and closed Mondays.
