Charlotte area serial rapist sentenced to life

Cold cases dating back 30 years in North Carolina are now closed, and a serial rapist will spend the rest of his life behind bars. A jury found 64 year old L.J. Bertha guilty of first-degree rape, kidnapping and common law robbery Monday according to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office.

Bertha is connected to multiple cold cases in Charlotte, including sexual assaults of women in 1993 and 1994. Serological testing conducted in both these cases in 2023 confirmed Bertha was the suspect.

The two victims, as well as a third from a 1996 assault, testified during Monday's case. Bertha had previously been convicted of the ’96 assault in 1997 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He will not be eligible for early release.
