Historic Charlotte LGBTQ+ bar The Scorpio will reopen inside a former South End nightclub

The Scorpio, one the oldest LGBTQ+ bars in Charlotte , will soon have a new home inside the former nightclub-turned-event space RSVP South End at 225 Fairwood Ave.

Why it matters: The transition marks a new chapter — and collaboration — for two local businesses. Starting July 1, The Scorpio will take over ownership and management at RSVP South End.

Context: The Scorpio closed its original Freedom Drive location in October 2023 after operating there for 55 years, reads its closing statement on Instagram.

• RSVP opened in South End in early 2023 as a multi-level nightclub with distinct atmospheres on each floor.
• In May, RSVP announced a shift to become an event venue.

What to expect: The Scorpio will acquire the entirety of the 15,000-square-foot nightclub, which includes three bars and two rooftops, according to an Instagram announcement .

• As part of the collaboration, RSVP will continue to use the space for private events, RSVP's director of events Christina Chen tells Axios.

The vibe: Scorpio will be open seven nights a week and will preserve RSVP's theme of creating a different vibe and sound in each space, including a dance floor, climate-controlled garden bar, private rooftop and parlor.

• There'll also be rotating DJs and themed events on the weekend.
