This weekend will be the hottest of the year in Charlotte. Heat index values , or what the outside temperature feels like to the human body, are expected to reach the triple digits, according to WBTV .

Why it matters: It's the first dangerous heat wave of the year , and it is coming earlier than usual, Axios' Andrew Freedman writes.

    • This heat wave is also unusual in its long duration, and the fact that it is affecting areas unaccustomed to extreme heat, from the Midwest and Ohio Valley to the Northeast.
    • The high temperatures also bring heightened risks for the very young and elderly and those with chronic health conditions.

Between the lines: Humidity levels in the Charlotte region will rise into the tropical level, with high temperatures topping out in the mid to upper-90s, according to WBTV, which has issued First Alerts for Saturday and Sunday.

    • The rising temps are due to a "strong ridge of high pressure overhead," meteorologist Rachel Coulter told Axios.
    • "The very muggy conditions won't help, pushing our heat indices, or 'feels like temperatures,' up above 100-degrees each afternoon," she adds.

Zoom out: The elevated temperatures could pose an increased risk of heat-related illnesses for those who are sensitive to heat and for anyone spending extended periods outdoors, the National Weather Service said about the local forecast.

    • Mecklenburg County is offering free box to local seniors (60+) and adults who receive disability income. More info here.
