Uchi , the renowned sushi-focused restaurant founded by James Beard award-winning chef Tyson Cole , announced on Thursday its plans to open a new location in Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood in late 2025 .

“We’re thrilled to announce that Uchi is coming to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2025! Our non-traditional approach to Japanese cuisine will find a new home in the vibrant Plaza Midwood neighborhood in late 2025,” the restaurant shared on its Instagram page.

The new Charlotte location will be part of the Commonwealth development and marks Uchi’s first entry into North Carolina. “Charlotte is the perfect location for Uchi as there are many similarities with our hometown, Austin,” said Todd Reppert , chief development officer, in a press release “Charlotte has been on an impressive growth spree and is poised to become the next hot market in the Southeast. The attractive climate, low cost of living, access to beaches and mountains, as well as the city’s large international airport, professional sports teams, and prominent role in the country’s banking sector, are a huge draw for us.”

Uchi, which means “house” in Japanese, first opened in a refurbished bungalow in Austin, Texas, in 2003. Since then, it has expanded to cities such as Denver, Miami, Scottsdale, and West Hollywood. The restaurant is celebrated for its unique take on Japanese cuisine, featuring signature tastings, sushi, and a seasonal omakase.
