Van Leeuwen to Join the Commonwealth Project in Plaza Midwood

Artisanal ice cream brand Van Leeuwen is set to join the Commonwealth development in Plaza Midwood .

Van Leeuwen’s inclusion in Commonwealth marks an exciting addition. Founded in 2008 on the streets of NYC, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream started with a simple mission: to make good ice cream that makes people feel good.

Emphasizing happiness as a key component of healthiness, Van Leeuwen offers ice cream made from high-quality ingredients, including both traditional and vegan options. Their philosophy centers on using choice, simple, and harmonious ingredients, ensuring a delightful experience for all.

Commonwealth, spearheaded by Crosland Southeast in collaboration with Nuveen Real Estate , began construction in Fall 2021. The mixed-use development aims to transform the outdated Central Square shopping center into a dynamic and energetic hub.

Spanning 12 acres, Commonwealth promises to bring a diverse array of retailers, restaurants, residences, a boutique hotel, and over 400,000 sq. ft. of Class A office space to the heart of Plaza Midwood. The development will encapsulate the neighborhood’s unique identity, prioritizing walkability, green spaces, engaging neighborhood programming, and large-scale art installations. Future transit stops via the Light Rail’s Gold and Silver Lines will ensure convenient and expanded accessibility.

Phase I focuses on revitalizing two legacy buildings, once home to Cole Manufacturing, into a destination for signature restaurants and curated retailers. This phase includes the community’s first mid-rise office building with over 150,000 sq. ft. of Class A office space and a 383-unit luxury apartment complex. Additionally, 100,000 sq. ft. of experiential retail and restaurant space will further enhance the area’s appeal.

Phase II will introduce over 250,000 sq. ft. of additional Class A office space and a boutique hotel, continuing the development’s momentum.
