A Charlotte, North Carolina , police officer is dead after allegedly turning a gun on himself on Monday afternoon, shooting himself as he sat in his truck.

The unidentified man was reportedly taken to the hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

Confirming the incident on X, a local Carolina-based publication, the department said, "Preliminary information indicates one CMPD officer suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries."

The department added that it's not looking for any suspects and that there is no danger to the public as it added that the investigation is active and that all further updates will come from CMPD Public Affairs — the personnel in the department who run the account.

The incident allegedly occurred in the Steele Creek Division of the city, with officers responding to calls in the middle of the day near 7300 Steel Creek Road, which is located just south of the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

"Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation in the Steele Creek Division," the police wrote. "Please steer clear of the area and expect road closures and significant travel delays."

At a press conference in the afternoon on Monday, Police Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters that it is a "very sad" day for his department as he emphasized the importance of looking after mental health.

He said, "They see and do things that normal people don't see. And that takes its toll." The Charlotte Observer reported that the officer had been on break near the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery when his "e-button" was activated. When officers arrived, they found him there, bleeding out, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at a local hospital.

The death of the officer comes just months after our law enforcement officers were killed as four others were injured in a mass shooting in the east of the city in April. The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., died in the shootout, it was reported.

Monday's incident happened sometime between noon and 12:30 p.m. EDT, according to local news reports and Chief Jennings. He declined to answer questions at the end of the briefing as he urged the public to respect the officer's family's privacy as the proper notifications are made.
