A young single mother is back from the Turks and Caicos Islands after she was seriously injured in a deadly car crash.
Majesty Carr is back in Charlotte and is about to undergo surgery, her family said Monday. The single mom was hospitalized after she was in a car crash while on vacation.
One of Carr’s friend was killed in the crash and several other people were also hurt. Carr was in critical condition with a fractured jaw and arm, a dislocated hip, and a brain bleed.
After the crash, Carr’s mother set up a GoFundMe to raise $25,000 for a special air ambulance to get her daughter back home. Doctors said she needed more care than they could provide, and her injuries were so extensive that she needed special transportation.
That fund has raised more than $30,000 after the community stepped in, helping bring her home.
Channel 9′s Hannah Goetz spoke with Carr’s family on Tuesday as her healing journey begins.
‘We got her back’
When we talked to Karen McMillan last month, it was an emotional conversation. She said she was in “desperate need” of help for Carr, her daughter.
Nearly two weeks later, McMillan’s conversation with Goetz was much different.
“If the world wouldn’t have came together, I still would be trying to figure [the expense] out. But my heart lifted when I realized the money was there and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ you know. I was shocked.”
After her story aired last month, their GoFundMe jumped from $2,000 to $30,000. Carr finally made it home on Saturday and was reunited with her mom and daughter.
“I just gave her a big kiss and told her I love her, and she looked at me and said, ‘Thank you so much mom, I’m so glad to be home.’ And I said ‘And I am glad you’re home,’” McMillan said.
Carr has had two surgeries in two days at Atrium Health to fix her jaw and shoulder and McMillan hasn’t left her side. She said she couldn’t be more grateful for everyone who helped bring her daughter home.
“I could give everybody a hug and show how grateful we are and how thankful. And just, we are grateful for their hearts,” she said.
Carr is expected to be in the hospital for a few more weeks. Her mom said they still have thousands of dollars of medical bills to cover.
