Centro Montford break ground this month

A fourth Centro development will bring 240 multi-family units to Montford by 2026.

Why it matters: The Centro brand is known for its micro-units that are naturally more affordable options in hot neighborhoods.

    • The smallest studios in Centro Montford will start at 425 square feet. There will also be one and two bedrooms.

Between the lines: Charlotte-based Ascent Real Estate Capital is partnering on the project with BCDC and Centro Cityworks.

    • Construction starts this month at 1700 Abbey Place , within walking distance of buzzy Montford Drive .
    • It includes 1,500 square feet of retail space at the corner of Abbey and Hedgemore.

The intrigue: Centro products have popped up in walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, such as NoDa and South End.

    • This one will take advantage of the new Little Sugar Creek Greenway extension.

Zoom out: Construction of Centro NoDa on East 36th Street is close to wrapping up. Residential leasing begins this fall, and renters can move in at the end of the year.

    • Some businesses have signed leases for the 11,000 square feet of retail space in NoDa, but Ascent hasn't shared names.
    • The other Centro projects are Centro Square on West Boulevard and The Winnifred in South End (formerly known as Centro Railyard before Ascent sold it).
