(WGHP) — A man is dead after a multi-county chase in North Carolina on Thursday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Around 2:07 p.m., troopers tried to stop a car on Interstate-77 North in Iredell County that was driving recklessly.

The vehicle did not stop for emergency lights and sirens, and a chase began. Troopers then learned the vehicle was stolen.

The chase entered Surry County on I-77 North, and the car crashed near mile-marker 85.

Troopers told the driver to get out of the car.

After receiving no response, troopers approached the car and found the driver, who was the only person in the car, dead with an apparent gunshot wound.

The driver was identified as a 20-year-old Charlotte man.

    The investigation is ongoing.
