CMPD: Driver hits, kills man trying to cross north Charlotte road

A man died after he was hit by a car Sunday in north Charlotte, police said. It happened around 4:50 p.m. at Statesville Avenue and Alma Court.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, responding officers found the victim, 67-year-old Michael Kenneth Sampson, lying in the road. He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of a 2021 Jeep Compass stayed at the scene. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and was not hurt, police said.

Detectives believe the woman was driving south on Statesville Avenue when she hit Sampson, who was trying to cross the road without a crosswalk.

The driver was found to have not been impaired.

Inbound Statesville Avenue at Carmine Street was blocked during the police investigation.
