Sprouts, the Arizona-based grocery chain, will open on 36th Street in NoDa in summer 2025

Sprouts, the Arizona-based grocery chain known for fresh produce and low prices, will open at 36th and Tryon streets in NoDa next year, Avery Hall principal Tarlton Long confirmed to Axios.

Why it matters: The new supermarket will fill a need in a changing part of the neighborhood. NoDa is rapidly developing, but it hasn't experienced the kind of grocery store expansion seen in areas like SouthPark and Ballantyne.

Between the lines: The new location, expected to open in summer 2025, will be just over 21,000 square feet — roughly one-third the size of a typical new Harris Teeter or Publix.

    • Like other Sprouts locations, it'll have an ample inventory of local fresh fruits and vegetables and natural, organic foods.
    • The development will have ground-floor parking in its parking deck for retail customers.

The big picture: Sprouts will anchor the mixed-use property at 3100 North Tryon St. called One NoDa Park , which is being developed by Avery Hall. The site is expected to also include 383 apartments, a public plaza and other retail space.

    • One NoDa Park is pre-leasing studio to 3-bedroom apartments, which should be ready in early fall.
    • The property is adjacent to the new Amélie's flagship bakery , just down the street from the 36th Street light rail stop and NoDa's main commercial stretch on North Davidson.

What they're saying: Long told Axios that the Sprouts is a "perfect fit" both culturally and practically for both One NoDa Park and NoDa overall.

    • "When purchasing the site in 2020, we recognized the need to bring a modern full-service grocer to a drastically underserved yet thriving neighborhood and made a commitment to serve that need at this key corner," Long said in a statement.
    • A Sprouts spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the new NoDa store.

The intrigue: Speculation about which grocery chain would move into the development has been a hot conversation in the neighborhood for months, as construction on the building progressed.

    • The only other supermarkets in NoDa are Food Lion and Giant Penny, both on The Plaza. Despite the area's need for more grocery options, grocers, which operate on thin margins, are picky when it comes to selecting new sites.
    • They consider a range of criteria when considering expansion, including area incomes, nearby competitors, demographics and traffic patterns.
    • Fun fact: Sprouts was first interested in the site back in 2019, right before Avery Hall bought the property, Long says.

Flashback: Sprouts debuted its first North Carolina store in Ballantyne in 2018. The grocer expanded to Steele Creek last year.

    • The company operates 400 stores across 23 states.

Little is the architect on the project, and Avery Hall is developing the site alongside Aria Development Group and Bridge Investment Group. The shell architect is BB+M, and the lender is United Bank.
