    Surry baseball and softball teams earn NJCAA All-Academic honors

    CHARLOTTE — The National Junior College Athletic Association recently announced the 2023-2024 Academic Teams of the Year. Both the Surry baseball and softball teams received distinction of All-Academic teams with a combined grade point average of all team members above a 3.0.

    Surry was the only college among the 37 member institutions in Region 10 to have multiple teams earn All-Academic accolades while having numerous NJCAA All-Americans along with each team being nationally ranked during the year.

    "Our student-athletes have once again proved their commitment to academics while also having incredible success on the field,” stated Surry athletic director, Mark Tucker. "These awards are a direct reflection of the hard work from our student-athletes and our coaches along with the support from our administration, faculty, and staff. Surry Community College is fortunate to have student-athletes that strive to pursue their educational goals along with coaches that emphasize academic excellence on a daily basis."

    The Surry baseball team finished third overall among all Region 10 baseball teams with a 3.01 grade point average and second among all North Carolina Community College baseball programs. On the diamond, Surry finished as Region 10 Regular Season Champions and Tournament Runners-Up. The Knights were 38-10 overall and ranked as high as 6th nationally finishing the season as the 9th ranked team nationally in the NJCAA. Surry had two student-athletes named as NJCAA All-Americans in Matthew Connolly (First Team, Catcher) and Jalen Chambers (Third Team, Infielder).Team members included Jacob Allen (Northwest Cabarrus HS), Anthony Ayers (East Surry HS), Ethan Ball (West Stokes HS), J.D. Basinger (East Rowan HS), Mikey Beasley (Carson HS), Luke Bowman (East Surry HS), Jalan Chambers (A.L. Brown HS), Caleb Cheeks (Grayson HS), Matthew Connolly (West Rowan HS), Konor Davis (Alexander Central HS), Brennan Fleming (Eastern Guilford HS), Jacob Fraas (Glenn HS), Lucas Graham (West Iredell HS), Jackson Greene (Hough HS), Nathan Greene (West Iredell HS), Ashton Gwyn (Mount Airy HS) Brady Halstead (Metrolina HS), Zach Helms (Northwest Cabarrus HS), Hunter Koontz (Central Davidson HS), Austin Lapham (Alexander Central HS), Micah Laney (Porter Ridge HS), Blaze Lawson (North Stokes HS), Ian McHugh (Pocono Mt. West), Zach McNeely (West Iredell HS), Dominic Mickle (West Stokes HS), Dakota Mills (Surry Central HS), Elijah Palmer (West Iredell HS), Caden Poole (Central Davidson HS), Payton Salter (Brevard HS), Sylas Sechrist (Carroll County HS), Aiden Shropshire (Surry Central HS), Emory Taylor (Carson HS), Colby Umbarger (North Iredell HS), Clay Whitaker (Surry Central HS), Gavin Williams (Lincoln Charter HS), and Dawson Yokley (Ledford HS).

    The Lady Knights finished sixth overall among all Region 10 softball teams and third overall among all North Carolina Community College softball programs with a 3.02 grade point average. On the field, the Lady Knights finished 21-19 while being ranked as high as 2nd nationally by the NJCAA.

    Team members included Lexie Allen (North Surry HS), Isabella Aparicio (North Surry HS), Maegan Banks (East Surry HS), Abigail Barrow (Northwest Guilford HS), Chloe Edwards (North Wilkes HS), Carlee Jones (Surry Central HS), Carley Joyner (Forbush HS), Layken Mathis (Starmount HS), Emily Mitchell (South Stokes HS), MacKenzie Mixon (Davie County HS), Hannah Patterson (West Forsyth HS), Carley Puckett (North Surry HS), Sydney Seagraves (Mount Airy HS), and Emma Sorrell (Forbush HS).

    Surry was also only one of eight Region 10 colleges with multiple teams honored by the NJCAA joining Caldwell, Cape Fear, Catawba Valley, Richard Bland, Spartanburg Methodist, Sandhills, and USC-Sumter.

    "We are incredibly proud of our athletic teams for their academic achievements," stated Tucker. "A special thanks to our Academic Support Center staff for all of their assistance. Our student-athletes committed over 2,000 hours of study hall and tutoring in our ASC this past academic year, which made a significant positive impact.
