Panthers 1st-round pick Xavier Legette is not happy, for good reason

Xavier Legette's first practice made him far more upset than giddy.

For most first-round draft picks, the first training camp practice would be a dream come true. However, Legette demands excellence out of himself. And on Wednesday, he was anything but the best wide receiver on the field.

Legette failed to catch a pass and struggled to get open Wednesday in his first organized practice since a hamstring injury that sidelined him for a portion of OTAs and minicamp, according to the Associated Press .

“First training camp, it started pretty slow for me,” Legette said . “I feel like it wasn’t my best, but we got time to continue to make it better. I get upset with myself about things like that, when I feel like I didn’t have the best day and didn’t leave everything out there on the field.”

Legette was the prize of the Panthers' offseason. For weeks leading up to the draft, it was known that Legette was the player Dan Morgan and Dave Canales wanted. Then on draft night, the Panthers traded into the first round to land the South Carolina product.

He then spent most of the early spring injured, missing offseason workouts – lending to the belief that Wednesday was merely rust as opposed to reality .

It is a claim Legette agrees with, stating that he is 100% healthy and eager to come back stronger in Thursday’s practice.

“I feel like I wasn’t really paying attention to detail today, so I need to buy in on that for the rest of the practices,” Legette added. “I didn’t have any catches today and really just mainly (want to) kind of get open a little better than I was, mainly like using my hands.”
