Panthers hosting three veterans for visits at a position of critical need

Dan Morgan is attempting to answer the pass rush question looming large over his defense.

Despite the noticeable depth at linebacker, the Carolina Panthers still don't have depth at pass rush – though it was an area of concern heading into the offseason.

To remedy the issue, Carolina has planned visits with three veteran pass rushers: Carl Lawson, Yannick Ngakoue, and Marquis Haynes, first reported by The Charlotte Observer.

Lawson didn't start a single game during the 2023 season. Before that disappointing campaign, he did log seven sacks and 33 combined tackles in 2022. However, what hasn't helped his career is a torn Achilles that changed the trajectory of his time in the NFL.

Haynes is a fourth-round pick out of Ole Miss. He was drafted in 2018 and spent the entirety of his career with the Panthers. As a free agent, Haynes hasn't found any viable takers looking to ink a long-term deal. That brings the Panthers back into play for his services. Carolina could desperately use him. In 71 games played for Carolina, Haynes has only started twice but has amassed 99 combined tackles, 14 sacks, and 18 tackles for loss.

Ngakoue had a productive 2023 season. He collected 22 combined tackles and four sacks while playing for the Chicago Bears. Working against Ngakoue is his journeyman career. In five seasons, he's played for six teams. But he may have a home in Charlotte if all goes well.

Morgan may elect not to sign one of the three veteran pass rushers. He recently indicated he believes DJ Johnson could be a series producer on Carolina's defense.

“Yeah, I mean, DJ Johnson,” Morgan replied. “Drafted him last year. He’s a big, physical guy."

Already, Carolina does have pass rushers Jadeveon Clowney , D.J. Wonnum and K'Lavon Chaisson. It will come down to them to hold down the fort until help arrives.
