Police arrested a wrong-way driver this week accused of hitting a man on a Charlotte road late Sunday and driving away without helping the man, who later died.

Antonio Darnell Harris, 34, was standing in the median in the 1100 block of West Sugar Creek Road when the driver of a Silverado pickup truck hit him, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. Harris died at a hospital, police said.

Harris was unresponsive when officers arrived and found him lying partially in the median in the northbound lanes, police said. MEDIC took Harris to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.

Police on Tuesday said they arrested 31-year-old Leonardo Hernandez Perez and charged him with felony death by vehicle, felony hit and run causing death, driving with no operator’s license, and reckless driving.

Police urged anyone who saw or has information about the collision to call CMPD Detective Danny Leung at 704-432-2169, extension 6, or the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600.
