The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on Wednesday released school performance grades and test score data for schools across the state.

The state saw more schools receiving an A, B or C performance grade and fewer receiving a D or F grade. The method North Carolina uses to calculate those letter grades, however, has faced criticism for stigmatizing students and teachers at low-performing schools. These schools often have high percentages of students from low-income families.

The grades are calculated from testing data that includes end-of-grade exam scores and academic growth students made during the previous school year. This year, state education officials released data for the 2023-24 school year, the third post-pandemic academic year.

The test scores released Wednesday show that 54.2% of students were proficient on state exams during the 2023-24 school year. That’s up from 53.6% the prior year and the post-pandemic low of 45.4% in the 2020-21 school year.
