Ardrey Kell had its game halted in the second quarter a week ago. The Knights wish the same thing had happened Friday night.

Ardrey Kell raced to a 28-7 lead midway in the second period, only to see visiting Marvin Ridge score the remaining 35 points in the game for a 42-28 nonconference victory.

Mavericks quarterback Braydon Rediger put on a passing clinic, throwing for 327 yards and five touchdowns — four of them to junior wide receiver Alex Voss.

“It was a learning experience,” Ardrey Kell coach Greg Jachym said. “But we’ll be OK.”

For coach Aubrey Carter and the Mavericks (2-1), Friday’s victory was a sign that their team will be able to hold its own this season in the rugged Southern Carolina 4A, with defending state champion Weddington and other powers like Porter Ridge, Cuthbertson and Sun Valley.

Rediger played a huge role in the turnaround. After completing just one of his first five passes, he went 9-of-11 for 230 yards during the rest of the first half.

A week ago, a thunderstorm halted Ardrey Kell’s game at Weddington, with the Warriors leading 14-0 in the second quarter. The teams decided not to finish the contest.

At about the same point in the game Friday, the Knights (1-2) led 28-7.

Gavin Adams threw two touchdown passes, and Tristan Rivest ran for two touchdowns and caught one of Adams’ scoring tosses. His third score came with 7:52 left in the half.

Then Rediger tossed touchdown passes of 4, 55 and 6 yards to Voss. The last of those scores, with 24 seconds left in the half, tied the game at 28-all.

Then Rediger had scoring passes to Hudson Murray and Voss in the second half.

    Three who made a difference

Braydon Rediger, Marvin Ridge: Rediger, a 6-4, 190-pound senior, completed 18-of-27 passes for 327 yards and five touchdowns.

Alex Voss, Marvin Ridge: Voss caught nine passes for 207 yards. Four of those receptions were for touchdowns.

Tristan Rivest, Ardrey Kell: A junior running back, Rivest rushed for 98 yards and had five receptions for another 73 yards. He scored three times.

    What’s next

Each team has a tough game next Friday. Ardrey Kell plays at Charlotte Christian, while Marvin Ridge hosts Lake Norman.
