A 12-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the killing of a teenager in northeast Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The boy who died has been identified as 16-year-old Jaiden Harris, CMPD said in a Sept. 15 news release.

It happened around 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the 8500 block of Burnt Umber Drive, officials said. The neighborhood is about one half mile south of Reedy Creek Park.

“Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. ... MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased,” CMPD said.

“Detectives identified a 12-year-old juvenile as a suspect in this case. The juvenile was transported to the Law Enforcement Center. ... At the conclusion of the interview, the 12-year-old juvenile was charged with involuntary manslaughter.”

The suspect was released into the custody of parents, police said.

Involuntary manslaughter cases typically involve “an unintentional killing,” due to negligence or recklessness, experts say.

Investigators have not released details of how the shooting occurred or if the suspect and victim knew each other.

A fundraising campaign reports Harris went by the nickname “Tank.”

Maps show the 8500 block of Burnt Umber Drive is in the Amberwood subdivision of single-family homes off Plott Road.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the CMPD Homicide Unit at 704-432-TIPS and speak to a detective. Anonymous tips can be given through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/ .
