These are the Charlotte area’s most underrated Mexican restaurants, as chosen by readers

    By CharlotteFive staff,

In Charlotte, tacos are everywhere. They pop up on bar menus, in food halls and all kinds of spots — Mexican restaurants and otherwise. But we’re always looking for the best of the best — along with new tastes to try.

So, we asked CharlotteFive readers to share what they think are the most underrated Mexican restaurants in the area.

You came up with 50 spots, including familiar favorites, food trucks and hole-in-the wall spots tucked inside other businesses. Now, you can take a look at this list of underrated Mexican restaurants and use it to try something new next time tacos are calling (or burritos or fajitas or nachos — you get the drift).

    1900 Mexican Grill

Location: 5110 Park Rd, Charlotte, NC 28209

Location: 1523 Elizabeth Ave, Charlotte NC 28204

Settle into 1900 Mexican Grill for your Taco Tuesday when you’re looking for a deal. Every Tuesday, tacos are $2.50, with choices including carne asada, carnitas, fish, alambre, chicharron de pollo, al pastor and veggie. Make sure to save room for the Mango Tres Leches, a dessert that offers a touch of tequila in the mango compote.

    Anita’s Mexican Grill

Location: 2904 Yorkmont Rd, Charlotte, NC 28208

At Anita’s Mexican Grill, you’ll find a no-frills spot serving up traditional flavors in Styrofoam containers for easy takeout. Daily specials start at $7.50, and its popular dishes include carne asada tacos, arroz con pollo and its enormous Lazy Burrito, filled with your choice of protein and smothered in green or red sauce.

“My family has been WAITING for them to be featured at some point. The food is authentic and we’ve tried lots of local Mexican restaurants. My parents frequently travel to Mexico, and they’ve raved about how Anita’s is THE MOST authentic Mexican food in the area, hands down!,” G.K. Oliver told CharlotteFive by email.

Location: 1863 W Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC 28052

Location: 9709 E Independence Blvd, Matthews, NC, 28105

When Mexican food is the topic, Azteca always seems to pop up as a favorite spot that Charlotteans hold near and dear. (You don’t open four restaurants in the Charlotte area without doing something right.)

“Azteca is the best spot,” CharlotteFive reader Melissa Rubio shared via Instagram.

Among the restaurant’s standout dishes are its Super Nachos Con Carne, with beans, cheddar cheese, guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes and onions, plus your choice of chicken, ground beef, shredded beef picadillo or housemade chorizo.

    Cactus Rose Cafe

Location: 633 Indian Trail Road South, Indian Trail, NC 28079

Cactus Rose has been around in some form since 1973, when it began as Pedro’s Mexican Restaurant in Matthews — a good indicator that the restaurant knows how to please. Make sure to try its “Famous Chili,” one of its platters or a sizzling plate of Tres Amigos fajitas with steak, chicken and shrimp.

    Casa Vieja

Location: 6928 Wilkinson Blvd, Belmont, NC 28012

Slide into one of the bright blue booths at Casa Vieja and page through an enormous menu of options to find the flavors you’re craving, whether that be a simple taco salad or a spicy plate of Camarones a la Diabla. Coco Mexican Restaurant

Location: 6914 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227

At Coco Mexican Restaurant, you’ll find a colorful atmosphere accented with neon lights and sugar skulls.

The newly opened restaurant has already built up a few customer favorites, and the No. 1 seller is its Chile Verde, cooked with pork, onion, cilantro and salsa verde, served alongside Mexican rice, refried beans and tortillas.

Del Sur Fresh Mex & Cantina

Location: 129 Gateway Blvd, Mooresville, NC 28117

Traditional tacos topped with onion and cilantro, elote and tortas are just a few of the tastes you can bite into at Del Sur Fresh Mex & Cantina in Lake Norman.

If you’re looking for a big meal packed with flavor, try the Molcajete Traditional, which comes with chorizo, chicken, steak, nopal and chambray onions in green salsa. It’s served with Anaheim chiles, white rice, shell-on shrimp, beans and tortillas.

    Don Pedros

Location: 1009 Chancellor Park Drive, Charlotte, NC 28213

If you’re an Azteca fan, you’ll most likely appreciate Don Pedros, too — the menus practically mirror each other. But there’s a bonus at Don Pedros: Sometimes, you can get entertainment with your meal, too. Some locations host drag singers, musicians, karaoke and comedy nights.

    El Pugarcito De America

Location: 4816 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205

At El Pugarcito, you’ll find a relaxed environment with food from all over Central America, including Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. Check out the Platillos Mexicanos section of the menu for fajitas de cameron, tostadas and quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos.

Location: Rodriguez Supermarket, 1409 Eastway Dr, Charlotte, NC 28205

Family recipes are key at El Riconcito Chilango Taqueria, where the chef’s background in Mexico City shines through. Besides its lineup of tacos, the restaurant says its must-try items are its Huarache Pueblerino, tortas, gorditas and even its quesadilla huitlacoche (made with corn fungus, which is a delicacy in Mexico).

    El Taco Veloz

Location: 6701 N Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28213

There are all sorts of things to try at El Taco Veloz, including breakfast options, tacos and nachos, platters and more.

But we suggest you go big and meal prep with the restaurant’s Molcajete, or share with a friend. You can choose up to three different meats — with nine options to choose from including grilled or breaded chicken, steak and pork. And it’s served with rice, beans, pico de gallo, grilled onion, nopales and jalapeno peppers.

Location: 109 E Union St, Marshville, NC 28103

El Vallarta offers daily brunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., which you won’t find at most Mexican restaurants. Offerings such as Huevos Divorciados and Huevos con Chorizo give you traditional Mexican-American breakfast bites, while bowls and specialty items such as the Texas Plate offer more of a lunchtime vibe.

Another unusual feature — in a good way — is the restaurant’s Taco Wednesdays, with taco specials during the same brunch hours. (Yes, you read that right — it’s Wednesdays, not Tuesdays.)

    El Valle Mexican Restaurant

Location: 305 W John St, Matthews, NC 28105

Location: 9229 Lawyers Rd Unit 0, Mint Hill, NC 28227

Family-owned El Valle offers two locations — Matthews and Mint Hill — where you can ease on into a booth and dive into the cheese dip that customers have deemed the No. 1 item on its menu. Since 1998, people have been showing up for its pollo con crema, quesadillas, tortas and more.

One more thing: You can also keep an eye out for the Valle Taco Truck, parked at the Exxon gas station at 2700 Old Monroe Road in Matthews for a taste of its food when you’re on the go.

    El Veracruz

Location: 391 Towne Centre Blvd, Pineville, NC 28134

Location: 761 N Main St., Mooresville, NC 28115

El Veracruz offers a vast lineup of combination plates, traditional favorites and even a lineup of soups and salads at its Pineville and Mooresville restaurant locations.

We’ll direct you to the chef’s specialties, where you can find combinations such as the Natalia’s Special with chicken and one beef flautas topped with cheese sauce and a Chalupa Texana or the Dos Amigos, which are t wo beef burritos topped with nacho cheese sauce.

    Fiesta Maya

Location: 3507 David Cox Rd b, Charlotte, NC 28269

Fiesta Maya is a carryout and delivery staple in the University City area that has a pages-long menu. There’s something for everyone, including vegetarian combos, a soup-and-salad menu and a variety of house specials.

Check out its seafood selection for a taste of coastal Mexico, with dishes such as Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (shrimp with garlic sauce) or Mojarra frita (a whole, fried tilapia).

    Fonda Mexicana El Paraiso

Location: 6105 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28217

This strip mall Mexican restaurant is set up as a takeout-only haven for those times when you’re looking for authentic flavors to hit the spot. There is a huge list of taco proteins available, including chorizo, cow’s head, tripe, barbecue lamb and mixed options, topped with onion and cilantro — of course. Pair yours with a melon or mango agua fresca and enjoy.

    Hacienda El Rey

Location: 3901 Providence Rd S Ste A, Waxhaw, NC 28173

Location: 5250 Old Charlotte Hwy Indian Trail NC 28110

Location: 1361 Chestnut Lane Matthews NC 28104

For those who are into chips and dip, Hacienda El Ray has got you covered. Its dip trio offers you mix-and-match options to pick three choices from cheese dip, guacamole, spinach dip, pico de gallo or bean dip — and you can even add chorizo or ground beef to your choices.

If you’re feeling fancy, you can instead dive into a bowl of Marisco Dip, a mix of crab and shrimp that’s topped with melted cheese.

    La Autentica

Location: 1101 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28204

La Autentica may not offer a fancy dining room or upscale experience, yet it’s still a Taco Tuesday hot spot. Grab a seat out on the patio, order a Tecate or a Modelo, and smash a few Tacos Authentica with your choice of asada, pastor, chicken and more. They come piled high with cilantro and onions, and they’re served with fresh limes for squeezing on just a bit more flavor.

    La Preferida

Location: 6625 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28217

The bright green, orange and blue exterior at La Preferida pulls you inside, where you’ll find authentic Mexican food that you can also order online to pick up and take home.

“La Preferida for Thursday BOGO tacos. They have the best salsa,” Hallie Hoffman said via Instagram.

Pro tip: Don’t miss out on its selection of desserts to soothe your sweet tooth. Options include flan, churros, sopapillas and tres leches cake, along with xango, a cheesecake chimichanga.

La Victoria Cocina Mexicana & Bar

Location: 16801 Caldwell Creek Dr, Huntersville, NC 28078

Location: 16139 Lancaster Hwy., Charlotte, NC 28277

At La Victoria, you may come in a stranger, but you’ll leave as a friend. Owner Willie Ceballos not only waves at folks coming in, but goes out of his way to thank diners and make small talk, ensuring you’ve had a good meal — and a great time. While you’re there, don’t miss out on trying his namesake Tacos Willie , one of the most popular items on the menu. The dish features nopales and jalapenos, crafted with a spice blend that accents the heat with a touch of sweetness.

“It’s always packed and the food is outstanding!” CharlotteFive reader Jessica Graham said via email.

Location: 1021 S Cannon Blvd, Kannapolis, NC 28083

Location: 1311 Klumac Rd., Salisbury, NC 28147

Los Arcos’s Gastonia location is home to a seven-day-a-week lunch buffet, where you can load up your plate with tacos, fajitas, nachos and even fried shrimp, with warm tortillas at the ready.

In Kannapolis and Salisbury, look for one of the lunch specials available for under $10, which includes menu options such as a beef burrito with rice and beans, or a chicken quesadilla with rice.

    Lupitas Carniceria & Tortilleria

Location: 5316 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28217

If you’re living an “ingredients household” type of life, you may appreciate what Lupita’s Carniceria & Tortilleria has to offer over a traditional restaurant experience. At the market, you can buy a stack of fresh tortillas, a hunk of Oaxaca cheese and a pound of carnitas, and set to work crafting your own tacos at home.

“Lupitas is so good if you wanna make your own. It’s not a restaurant necessarily, but you can buy everything you need and do a picnic. The fresh tortillas are amazing,” so.queenlo said via Instagram.

    Mamacita’s Food Truck

    Location: L & V Auto Sales, 1504 W Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC 28052

On Taco Tuesdays, Mamacitas’ Food Truck in Gastonia will load you up with taco choices. Chomp into asada (steak), pollo (chicken) or pastor (pork), paired with a soda for lunch. On Saturdays, burritos are the special — and you can even get them Campechano style, which is a mix of proteins.

“I’m passionate about sharing our culture through food,” owner Vanesa Gomez told CharlotteFive.

    Maria’s Mexican Restaurant

Location: 5234 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC, 28217

Maria’s Mexican has become a bit famous for its birria selection, including standout tacos, pizza and ramen. Everything is made fresh to order, however, so there’s plenty to explore on the menu.

Among the non-birria dishes you’ll want to check out is the Arroz con Pollo Supreme, a mix of chicken, shrimp and steak, combined with a vegetable medley of carrots, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes and onions. It’s served over rice and topped with cheese dip.

    Mezcali Mexican Restaurant

    Location: 1640 Sardis Rd N B160, Charlotte, NC 28270

Drink one of the daily specials at Mezcali while you browse a menu filled with flavor. Check out the Mezcali’s Best, made with shrimp, steak and chicken with a creamy chipotle cheese sauce, or try a customer favorite: the chicken and steak fajitas.

    Miguel’s Mexican American Restaurant

Location: 4252 Business Center Dr, Charlotte, NC 28214

Nominated by several people — including chef Chris Coleman of The Goodyear House, Haymaker and Old Town Kitchen & Cocktails — Miguel’s is small Mexican-American restaurant near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Delivery isn’t available, but you can stop in for a burrito, enchiladas or cauldo — or pick up your order to take home. Miguel’s also offers $6.95 lunch specials on weekdays and $6.99 lunch fajitas on Sundays.

    Monterrey Mexican Restaurant

Location: 10707 Park Rd, Charlotte, NC 28210

Tucked in the Park 51 shopping center across from Atrium Health Pineville, you’ll find family-owned Monterrey Mexican Restaurant open for takeout orders or sit-down service with a full bar.

Among the hefty menu is a long list of combination platters — 30, to be exact. But if those options aren’t enough for you to mix and match the tastes you’re craving, you can also create your own by choosing three items to pair with rice and beans, or upgrade by selecting a cheese, beef or chicken quesadilla.

    Morazan

Location: 4918 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205

Location: 201 Archdale Dr, Charlotte NC 28217

Location: 5421 South Blvd, Charlotte NC 28217

Besides offering three Charlotte locations, there’s something you’ll find at Morazan that you won’t see at a whole lot of sit-down restaurants serving Mexican food — breakfast . So you can start your day at the Central American spot with an egg scramble and plantains, or come back later in the day for a chimichanga lunch special.

    No Way Jose’s

Location: 303 S Main St, China Grove, NC 28023

No Way Jose’s opened in November 2013 and has been feeding fans ever since with daily lunch, dinner and drink specials. Make sure to come hungry — everyone starts their meals with the restaurant’s complimentary nachos, salsa and a bowl of its house-made bean dip.

“Great food and the price won’t break your wallet,” Lydia Cosgrove told CharlotteFive via email.

    Osito’s Tacos & Tortas

Location: 20700 N Main St, Cornelius, NC 28031

While Osito’s may be more of a fusion spot than a purely Mexican restaurant, it’s still got plenty of Mexican flavors to explore. Choose from a long lineup of tacos with your choice of corn or flour tortillas, tortas, quesadillas, nachos and more. The Lake Norman restaurant offers party packs and family meals, too.

    Paco’s Tacos & Tequila

Location: 6401 Carnegie Blvd #8a, Charlotte, NC 28211

Longtime staple Paco’s Tacos & Tequila offers a Tex-Mex spin on your favorite Mexican food flavors, such as chili con queso with roasted green poblano chiles and scallions. The SouthPark area restaurant offers lunch and dinner, so you can enjoy the patio with a margarita or a Paco’s Citrus Cantarito while you munch on your meal and enjoy the atmosphere.

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=17Ry7j_0vdIz2Ch00
At Pacos Tacos & Tequila, you can also customize your margarita. Paco's Tacos & Tequila

Location: 306-6 Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152

Location: 3150 Dallas High Shoals Hwy., Dallas, NC 28034

Papas & Beer offers 10 locations in the Carolinas, and two of those are within easy driving distance of Charlotte. Its California-style Mexican food includes choices such as a Grilled Mexican Caesar Salad, Yucatan Flautas and California Jalapeno Bacon Fajitas.

If you dare, you can take on its $24.99 Mega Burrito and come away with a trophy T-shirt if you can finish it in 30 minutes.

    Que Onda

Location: 13016 Eastfield Rd, Suite B300, Huntersville, NC 28078

Location: 3022 Weddington Rd Suite 100, Matthews, NC 28105

Location: 1518 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205

Location: 9601 N Tryon St Suite K, Charlotte, NC 28262

    Location: 333 W Trade St #101, Charlotte, NC 28202

It may be a stretch to call Que Onda underrated, as it was a runner-up to sister restaurant Que Fresa in CharlotteFive’s best taco poll — yet it was nominated multiple times anyway.

Get exploratory there, as there are several options on the menu outside of the traditional foods you’d expect to see on a Mexican restaurant menu. Go for brunch or later on in the evening to sample one of its date-night worthy entrees such as Salmon Veracruz or Ancho Short Rib.

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=0QwtsZ_0vdIz2Ch00
Que Onda offers authentic — and elevated — Mexican cuisine. Que Onda

    Rey Azteca

Location: 4052 Charlotte Hwy, Clover, SC 29710

Rey Azteca promises the best fajitas in the Lake Wylie area, so it almost feels like a challenge to try some and make sure that’s correct. You can choose from options that include its Fajitas Hawaiana, packed with beef, chicken and shrimp, plus pineapple topped with shredded cheese. Or go big with the Parrillada Mexicana, which comes with carnitas, shrimp, Mexican sausage, chicken and beef, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and peppers.

    Senor Chicken

Location: 809 E. Arrowood Rd., Ste 2200, Charlotte NC 28217

At Senor Chicken, chicken and steak tacos are among the most popular items. But there are also a few things you won’t find on every Mexican food menu in town, including tacos dorados, a selection of soups that includes menudo and tamales. (You can even order them by the dozen .)

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3BvLIu_0vdIz2Ch00
Senor Chicken’s chicken tacos are among its most-ordered items. Tonya Russ Price/CharlotteFive

    Senor Taco

Location: 1910 Milton Rd, Charlotte, NC 28215

Not only does Senor Taco have a variety of tacos and sopes to satisfy, but there are also a variety of chicken and steak plates for when you’re really hungry or want leftovers at the ready. Choices include Pollo Ranchero with onions, mushrooms, cheese and peppers on top or the Alambre, with bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and bacon. Both are served with rice, beans, salad and tortillas on the side.

    Superica

Location: 4223 Providence Rd Suite D, Charlotte, NC 28211

    Location: 101 W Worthington Ave #100, Charlotte, NC 28203

Superica, a popular Tex-Mex chain with a handful of locations across the South, may not really qualify as underrated. But it was nominated as such, nevertheless.

When we think Tex-Mex, we think first about chile con queso and queso fundido, so be sure to pick your favorite there. Then, if you can handle a little more cheese, think about trying a chile relleno stuffed with corn and mushrooms.

    Supermercado y Restaurante El Mariachi

Location: 6301 N Tryon St Suite 101-105, Charlotte, NC 28213

Inside this Mexican grocery, you will find Restaurante El Mariachi, with a case full of Mexican food favorites hot and ready to go. Peek behind the glass at what looks best, or choose from a selection of burritos, tacos, quesadillas. Family platters are available, as are snacks such as chicharron and shrimp.

    Taco Molino

Location: 1328 Broadcloth St #102, Fort Mill, SC 29715

Taco Molino, situated in Fort Mill’s busy Kingsley development, is one of those restaurants that’s almost always busy but can almost always get you in with a short wait anyway — a big plus when you’re hungry and haven’t made reservations.

You can’t go wrong with any of the taco selections there, but we’ll note that the spicy cauliflower and bang bang shrimp choices are particularly good. And don’t pass up a chance to upgrade one of your sides to the street corn option — it’s worth it.

    Tacos Don Coyotl

    Location: Mobile

Check out Tacos Don Coyotl’s weekly schedule to find this food truck serving up birria tacos served with red and green salsa, tortas and burritos. (And if you’re a fan of Antojitos La Poblana, know that this is the same food truck — it’s just operating with a new name.)

    Tacos El Flacko

    Location: Mobile

Tacos El Flacko is a second generation taqueria, carrying on a legacy started by the owner’s father, who ran the Taqueria Los Tres Potrillos trailer selling tacos in NoDa in the early 2000s. Look for authentic tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos. Plus, you can also find vampiros, a Mexican street snack blends a taco, tostada and quesadilla into one dish.

    Tacos El Nevado

Location: 4640 South Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28209

Location: 4715 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205

If you’re looking for a restaurant that showcases traditional flavors and hand-made tortillas while offering Americanized options, too, Tacos El Nevado might be the right spot for you.

For example, you could try the Guacamole with Chapulines (grasshoppers), or dip your chips into the Gringo Dip, which is refried beans topped with cheese dip. The Torta Oaxaquenas pairs ham and Oaxaca cheese with tomato, jalapeños, avocado and beans; or you could go for a burger topped with tomato, onion, lettuce, cheese and jalapeños.

“Tacos Nevado is the most underrated and best authentic spot in Charlotte,” Latinos in Charlotte told CharlotteFive via Instagram.

    Tacos El Peladito

Location: 349 Copperfield Blvd NE K, Concord, NC 28025

Owners Javier and Isabel Alencaster hail from Puebla, Mexico, where they grew up and fell in love. Now, they’re making fresh to order Mexican food that showcases their cultural roots, with street tacos, quesabirria, a variety of caldos (broth-based soups) and other traditional offerings.

    Tacos El Regio

    Location: 8829 E W.T. Harris Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28227

Tacos El Regio sticks mostly to what it does best: Tacos, of course. Sure, there’s a few tortas on the menu and even a couple of stuffed baked potatos. But you’ll want to check out its staples, including the Gringa (marinated pork and melted cheese) and Tacos Al Ambre, (steak, bell pepper, onion, bacon and sausage on corn tortillas).

    Taxco

Location: 9719 Sam Furr Rd., Suite E, Huntersville, NC 28078

Location: 6418 Wilkinson Blvd., Belmont, NC 28012

Location: 7106 Brighton Park Drive, Mint Hill, NC 28227

    Location: 930 East Garrison Blvd.Gastonia, NC 28054

There’s a huge menu to wade through at Taxco, with four Charlotte-area locations. Besides the full bar stacked with tequila options, you can have your choice of nine variations on tacos — topped regular (with cilantro and onion) or especial (with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream).

If you like spice, you may also want to challenge yourself with the Pollo al Chipotle or Camarones la Diabla — among just a few items on the menu marked “hot!”.

    Three Amigos

Location: 2917 Central Ave A, Charlotte, NC 28205

Three Amigos is the restaurant where it all began for the Raydal Hospitality Group that built Sabor Latin Street Grill, La Caseta and most recently, MaBi Cocina Tropical . You know the food is solid, so it’s only a matter of picking what you’re hungry for when you stop in, whether that be for enchiladas, tacos or one of its signature dishes. We suggest trying the Pollo En Mole or Bistec a la Mexicana.

    Viva Tequis Taqueria and Cantina
