    Will Charlotte-area schools close due to severe weather? What to know as Helene arrives

    With meteorologists predicting heavy rain and possible floods in the Charlotte area from Hurricane Helene on Thursday and Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials canceled in-person classes for the rest of the week.

    The district will move to remote learning on Friday, with classes to be completed asynchronously, meaning there won’t be any face-to-face instruction, according to a weather alert posted on the CMS website .

    “All asynchronous assignments for the day will be posted on the teacher’s Canvas page by 7 a.m. Friday, emailed out via ParentSquare by 7 a.m. Friday, and/or provided to the students via paper on Thursday,” the alert says. “To ensure all students have the resources they need, teachers will review with students on Thursday how to access the assignments for Friday. If you have any questions about your student’s assignments, please contact your student’s teacher(s).”

    After school activities for Thursday and Friday are canceled, according to the district. Athletic events will be rescheduled.

    UNC Charlotte also announced all classes would be held online beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday through 11:59 p.m. Friday. Scheduled athletic events will continue. The status of other campus events on Thursday and Friday are at the discretion of their organizers.

    Charlotte-area school closures

    Below are updates about other area schools and districts:

    Charlotte Country Day School: Classes are canceled for Friday. All other school-related activities are also canceled.

    Charlotte Latin School: Classes are canceled for Friday. After-school activities will continue Thursday, and sports will practice on a case-by-case basis. After-school activities Friday will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

    Cabarrus County Schools will be closed on Friday. Athletic and extra-curricular events and activities are canceled on Thursday and Friday. The KIDS:PLUS after-school program will be open on Thursday but closed on Friday. The district announced there will not be a make-up day.

    Catawba County Schools : Closed for students on Friday. It will be an optional workday for all teachers, replacing the previously scheduled elementary/middle school workday. The weather on Friday morning is not safe for bus routes, employees, and student drivers, with high winds and saturated ground potentially causing downed trees and power lines, the district said.

    Chester County School District canceled after-school and athletic events for Thursday, the district posted on its web site. Friday will be an e-learning day and Friday’s athletic and after-school events have been canceled.

    Clover School District will have an e-learning day on Friday. Scheduled homecoming events and athletics on Friday evening will continue as planned, the district said in a news release. Any schedule changes will be released by individual schools.

    Fort Mill Schools : All schools and district facilities will be closed on Friday. The district will transition to e-learning for the day. Sports events for Friday night will continue as scheduled, the district said in a news release. Any changes will be sent out by individual schools, the district said.

    Gaston County Schools : All after-school and evening activities, including athletics, are canceled for Thursday. Friday will be a remote learning day for students, and all after-school activities are canceled.

    Iredell-Statesville Schools: All after-school and evening activities, including athletics, are canceled for Thursday. Friday will be a remote learning day in the district, according to a spokesperson. Parents, students and staff should follow the district’s inclement weather protocols.

    Kannapolis City Schools will not have school for students on Friday. All after-school activities are also canceled for Thursday.

    Lancaster County School District will have an e-learning day Friday and has canceled Friday after-school and athletic events, the district posted on its web site.

    Lincoln County Schools will be closed for students Friday. All before- and after-school activities are canceled Friday.

    Mooresville Graded School District : Closed to students on Friday, and will operate on a remote learning day. Additional information regarding the remote learning day will be forthcoming from each child’s school. All after school activities for Thursday have been canceled. All before and after school activities for Friday have been canceled.

    Providence Day School: Classes are canceled for Friday. After-school activities may take place on a case-by-case basis.

    Rock Hill School District will have an e-learning day on Friday. Weather conditions are expected to clear by Friday evening, allowing extracurricular activities to move forward as scheduled unless otherwise noted by the school.

    Rowan-Salisbury Schools will have an e-learning day Friday. That means students will access lessons online through Canvas or utilize materials sent home Thursday. All afternoon and evening activities are canceled Thursday.

    Union County Public Schools canceled all after-school activities for Thursday, which includes band, athletics and clubs. The UCPS After School Program will operate on a normal schedule and close at 6 p.m. All classes and after-school activities are canceled Friday, the district announced.

    York School District will have an e-learning day Friday and has canceled Friday after-school and athletic events, the district posted on its Facebook page .
