Charlotte Catholic investigates bullying allegations, possibly involving football players

Charlotte Catholic High School is investigating multiple reports of bullying in the boys’ locker room, head football coach Keith Emery told The Observer on Wednesday.

Emery said he couldn’t comment on whether any football players had been disciplined, but confirmed the an investigation by school officials is ongoing.

“I really can’t discuss an ongoing investigation,” Emery said, “but what I can tell you is that we’re taking this seriously and will take whatever disciplinary and other action is necessary to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Charlotte Catholic’s football team is 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the Southwestern 4A conference and tied with Butler for first place. Catholic is scheduled to play at Butler on Friday.

Catholic principal Lori Phillips and president Kurt Telford said in a statement provided to The Observer’s news partner at WSOC-TV that they were looking into three separate incidents of bullying that had recently occurred on campus.

Charlotte Catholic “was made aware of the incidents on October 2 and 3 and immediately began an investigation,” the statement read. “While our investigation is ongoing, we have begun to impose discipline where appropriate based on the evidence we have obtained. Under our policy, discipline may include the suspension and possible dismissal of students, removal from extracurricular activities, as well as other consequences.”
