Southwestern Vermont Medical Center ER officially opens
Vermont Business Magazine Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) Thursday joined Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) in Bennington for the ribbon cutting and celebration of its newly modernized emergency department. The Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s (SVMC) Kendall Emergency Department, Stout Thomson Waiting Area and Outpatient Registration along with the Richard and Pamela Ader Foundation Lobby and the Jackie and Tony Marro Café includes renovations to expand emergency services and care to Bennington and nearby communities. The project was a three-year undertaking.

Hubbardton man accused of firing gun at neighbor twice in one day
Hubbardton, VT- A Hubbardton man is scheduled to be in court in October after police say he fired a gun at his neighbor on two separate occasions on Wednesday. David Barker, 78, is facing a reckless endangerment charge. Police say a neighbor reported hearing bullets near him while riding an ATV, and saw Barker outside his house holding a gun. The same man also reported bullets being fired at his house from Barker’s home across the road, while there were multiple people inside.

Candidate for Plattsburgh Common Council charged with DWI
The only candidate in Plattsburgh’s Ward 6 common council race was arrested for drunk driving last week. The Plattsburgh Press Republican reports that Amy Collin was stopped by Plattsburgh Police on August 22nd and a breath test showed a blood alcohol level of .10-percent. The Democrat said she had three drinks at a local bar before leaving to visit a friend. She faces charges of driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol level exceeding .08 percent and failure to signal.

West Nile virus detected in Colchester mosquitoes; first human case of Eastern equine encephalitis in Vermont since 2012 discovered in Chittenden County
COLCHESTER — West Nile virus has been found in Colchester mosquitoes this summer, according to Vermont Department of Health data collection done late last month. Each week from July to mid-October, mosquitoes collected from locations all over Vermont to be tested for mosquito-borne viruses. Although no human or animal cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in 2024 thus far, four of 50 pools of mosquitoes collected July 30 in Colchester tested positive for the virus — with a “pool” being a group of 1-50 mosquitoes of the same species collected at the same trap location and on the same date.
