On the Menu: Grand Army
Welcome to On the Menu, where we explore what makes a bar’s menu unique, intriguing, and all-around delicious. When Grand Army opened in Brooklyn in 2015, the aim was to be a welcoming neighborhood bar that simply felt like an extension of a friend’s living room. That is, if your friends regularly shuck raw oysters and serve a cheeky lineup of well-made cocktails. From the outset, the bar team—comprised at the time of industry vets like Damon Boelte (also co-owner), Katie Stipe, and Devin Kennedy—created cocktail menus crafted to a theme, from “State Parks” to “Spice Girls.”

Om: ‘Live at Pioneer Works’ Video Posted From 2019 Brooklyn Show
This show happened in Dec. 2019, just as the world was getting ready to end (again; ah the cycles of death and renewal!), and captures Om at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, New York, vivid in deep hues of blue and green. It’s not the full set — included are opener “Gethsemane” and “State of Non-Return,” which followed, and a concluding take on “Bhima’s Theme”; timestamps below are courtesy of YouTuber @orion_cliff, who left them in a comment; I chased down the whole setlist, also below, with the barest modicum of internetular research — but it’s Om, playing live, professionally recorded. I don’t know what you had in mind for the next half-hour or so of your life, but if you look at the percentages, the greater likelihood is you’re better off spending it in the virtual company of Al Cisneros‘ bass tone anyhow. Whatever else it was can wait.

At Le Café Hellmann’s in New York City, the brand’s first-ever pop-up café concept, French fry fans can try the elevated condiment pairing complimentary for one day only. Hellmann’s Mayonnaise knows there are Americans out there who love dipping their French fries in mayo – in fact, a survey of ~2,000 Americans* found that 1 in 3 enjoy the pairing but feel self-conscious enjoying it in front of others. What some may not realize is that fries served with a side of mayo is commonplace in France and other European countries. And with Paris on our minds this season, Hellmann’s knows no better time to encourage fans to eat French fries the best way – with mayo.

Has the Ondrej Palat contract been THAT bad?
Two summers ago, the New Jersey Devils were looking to make yet another splash in free agency. And why not? Twelve months earlier, they convinced Dougie Hamilton to come to New Jersey. The Devils, despite having a down year in 2021-22, were viewed as a team on the cusp of turning the corner and being a really good hockey team, if only they could get the right supporting pieces around their young core. They had cap space to play with at the time, thanks in part to the team-friendly deals that Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes had already signed, as well as with PK Subban’s $9M AAV contract expiring. And their younger high-end prospects were years away from contributing anything at the NHL level. The time to go for it and spend money is now!
