Homeless Encampment On Former Rite Aid Lot
Photo Phyllis Parra Neighbors have filed over a hundred complaints about an apparent encampment in the lot of a former Rite Aid Pharmacy at 47-07 Broadway, between Newtown Road and 47th Street. It seems the 25,000 sq. ft. site has been taken over by homeless people. There are old chairs, tables, mattresses and couches that people have been sleeping and hanging out on, apparently drinking alcohol and possibly doing drugs, since January. There have been complaints of public urination as well. The police are not authorized to arrest people for public drinking or urination. The eyesore has an odd assortment of toys, paintings, bikes, fire extinguishers and other random objects hanging from the edge of the building, a shopping cart filled with bottles and cans, and a table with other items, apparently a flea market of sorts. People in the community are concerned about a possible fire hazard, children playing on piles of lumber with nails in one section, drug-selling, ambulances called, and graffiti. NYS Senator Michael Gianaris has denounced the situation in his district and contacted the NYPD and the Mayor to press for action. He said the site’s owner is responsible. There appears to have been some recent action and a clean-up effort, or barricading of the area to discourage the squatters.
