Shaping Modern New York
When was the modern city of New York born? Some might say that it was in the 1820s, when the Erie Canal was completed, connecting the port city to the Great Lakes and transforming it into the commercial center of the nation. Others might say that it was in the 1900s, when the subway system opened, forever altering the way that New Yorkers would move throughout the city. Still others would point to its cultural milestones—from the emergence of Broadway to the opening of Lincoln Center. In many ways, the story of New York is the story of these accumulating accomplishments—of the layers of transportation, commerce, and culture that came together to create something greater than the sum of its parts: the diverse tapestry of the city that never sleeps.

LOWER EAST SIDE — Brooklyn residents who receive treatment from Beth Israel Hospital are alerted that the medical facility received approval to close on Thursday, reports Crain’s New York Business. The Mount Sinai Health System has been pressuring the state for closure for almost a year amid financial challenges, particularly cash flow deficits and a reserve that was just $29 million by the end of last year. The submitted closure plan, on which the State Department of Health placed conditions for approval, showed that Beth Israel Hospital loses $18 million per month. One of the conditions will require Mount Sinai Hospital System to open and operate a new Mount urgent care center nearby (Lower East Side) for at least three months. Mount Sinai will also be required to develop an agreement with New York City Health + Hospitals (the city’s public health system) to invest in an expansion of Bellevue Hospital’s emergency room and psychiatric emergency department. As of press time, no date has been announced for the closure.
