Chattanooga, TN – According to the officials, two off-duty Chattanooga Fire Department captains, Justin McCommon of Engine 22 (Red Shift) and Jason Moses of Engine 17 (Red Shift), received Life-Saving Medals for their heroic actions during a fiery interstate crash earlier this year.

The captains were returning from a business trip in Indianapolis on February 19, 2024, when they encountered a multi-vehicle accident on I-65 in Scott County, Indiana, approximately 30 minutes north of Louisville, Kentucky.

As traffic slowed, they heard a loud crash behind them. They immediately responded to the scene, where they saw a tractor-trailer engulfed in flames and the driver hanging out of the window, unable to escape. The driver, waving for help, was trapped in the burning wreckage.

Video footage captured the tense moments as Captain McCommon climbed onto a nearby pickup truck to assist retired Chattanooga Police Officer Brian Bloomberg in pulling the semi driver to safety.

At the same time, Captain Moses worked to contain the flames by using fire extinguishers. Their quick response saved the driver’s life, and minutes later, the flames intensified, engulfing the area where the driver had been trapped.

Chattanooga Fire Chief Phil Hyman praised both captains for their bravery. “I had no doubt that you would do exactly what needed to be done in that instance, even when you were both off-duty.

What you did was outstanding, and I’m proud of you for your willingness to help others no matter where you are or what you’re doing. It speaks volumes about your character,” he said.

The heroic rescue, caught on camera, highlighted their dedication to service, even while off duty.
