Chattanooga, TN – According to the police officials, since joining the department in August 2022, Chief Sommers made a lasting impact by strengthening numerous programs and operations while fostering a culture of excellence.

He served as Interim Chief of Police starting June 26.

Before his time with CPD, Chief Sommers spent 30 years with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, where he ultimately served as Special Agent in Charge of the Southeast Division.

His career with the DEA included both domestic and international assignments, giving him unique insights into law enforcement challenges.

After leaving the DEA, Chief Sommers spent nearly seven years as Senior Director of Strategic Security for the Coca-Cola Company. His strategic focus and global security expertise provided invaluable perspectives to CPD.

Chief Sommers began his career as a police officer with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia, where his passion for public service took root. His decision to conclude his career in a police uniform brought him full circle, a choice the Chattanooga Police Department was grateful for.

CPD honored Chief Sommers for his dedication to the community and the legacy he left behind. As he embarks on a new chapter with his wife, enjoying life surrounded by family in Chattanooga, the department wished him the best in retirement.

Chief Sommers will be remembered for his wisdom, dedication, and service. He will be missed.
