Chattanooga, TN – An anhydrous ammonia spill at Mount Vernon Mills late Wednesday night led to the evacuation of several homes. The incident occurred around 10 PM on June 26, 2024, when a tanker began leaking on Fourth Street.

The Trion Fire Department quickly requested additional assistance to contain the leak. Several streets were shut down, and homes adjacent to the mill were evacuated as a precaution. The town’s recreation center was opened to accommodate those displaced by the evacuation.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including CFD Hazmat 1, Squad 1, the Special Operations Division, the Hamilton County Hazmat Team, and the Hamilton County OEM Special Operations. By 12:15 AM on June 27, 2024, the leak was successfully contained, and all Chattanooga-Hamilton County units were back in service following the mutual aid alarm.
