    Mackinaw City baseball clinches at least share of NLC title; three Chiefs win track crowns

    ELLSWORTH – For the first time since 2021, the Mackinaw City baseball team can call itself Northern Lakes Conference champions .

    The Comets clinched at least a share of the NLC title by sweeping Ellsworth with 11-1 and 9-0 victories on Tuesday. If Ellsworth splits with or sweeps Harbor Light on Friday, the Comets (20-10) will be outright champions.

    “I am extremely proud of my kids,” Mackinaw City coach Elijah May said. “They have battled all season and league banners don’t come around every year. My players, especially the four seniors, really earned this title.”

    The pitching was magnificent all day for the Comets, who saw Braylon Currie and Sabastian Pierce combine for a no-hitter in the opener. Currie earned the win, striking out three in 1 1/3 innings, while Pierce tossed 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

    Offensively, Nick Vieau (two RBIs) and Sabastian Pierce (three runs) paced Mackinaw City with two hits apiece, while Lucas Bergstrom (double, run), Tanyon Pierce (RBI, run), Ben Strittmatter (RBI, two runs) and Trystan Swanson (RBI) each chipped in with a hit. Currie had an RBI and scored twice.

    Currie was masterful on the mound in the nightcap, earning the win with 12 strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

    IL GIRLS WIN TRACK REGIONAL TITLE: Balanced effort lifts Inland Lakes girls to second consecutive regional track title

    Currie helped his cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Bergstrom also went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Sabastian Pierce added a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Knox Wilson (RBI, run), Tyler Hingston (RBI) and Strittmatter (two runs) were other key contributors.

    Sabolsky, Sidlauskas, Ecker take first at SAC meet

    ST. IGNACE – The Cheboygan track and field teams saw three athletes become Straits Area Conference champions at the SAC meet in St. Ignace on Tuesday.

    Leading the way for the Cheboygan boys were Gabe Sabolsky , who finished first in the 400 (55.2), and Lucas Sidlauskas, who won the discus (147-3).

    For the Cheboygan girls, Bella Ecker captured the title in the high jump (4-11).

    The Cheboygan boys finished fourth with 63 points, while the Cheboygan girls were also fourth with 54 points. Sault Ste. Marie won the SAC team title for both the boys and girls.

    Onaway baseball takes care of Comets in sweep

    MACKINAW CITY – The Onaway baseball team swept Mackinaw City with 7-0 and 14-2 victories on Monday.

    Leading the Cardinals (16-7) in game one was Anthony Santiago, who homered, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Cole Selke and Luke Lovelace each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, while Gavin Green, Andrew Gulley and Jackson Chaskey chipped in with a hit apiece. Justin Kramer-St. Germain tallied a hit.

    Dylan Szymoniak was the winning pitcher, striking out eight, walking four and scattering two hits in 3 2/3 innings. Veal tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, striking out four and surrendering one hit.

    For Mackinaw City, Nick Vieau doubled and had an RBI, Tyler Hingston tallied a hit and a run scored, and Wesley House added a hit. Vieau was the losing pitcher, striking out four, allowing seven hits and walking one in six innings.

    Lovelace had a big offensive game for Onaway in the nightcap, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. Registering two hits apiece were Chaskey (RBI, run), Selke (three runs) and Veal (three runs). Kramer-St. Germain (RBI, two runs), Szymoniak (two runs), Green (RBI) and Gulley rounded out the Cardinals with a hit apiece.

    Veal earned the win on the mound, striking out six, allowing one hit and walking one over four innings. Santiago tossed the last inning, striking out three.

    Vieau’s hit and RBI led Mackinaw City. Trystan Swanson was the losing pitcher.

    Onaway's DeMaestri homers twice, Cards sweep Comets

    MACKINAW CITY – The Onaway softball team continued its recent offensive success by rolling to 25-6 and 26-8 victories over Mackinaw City in a doubleheader on Monday.

    Ema DeMaestri finished with two hits, including a homer, knocked in three runs and scored four times, while Carley Karsten (four RBIs, two runs) and Charlotte Box (two RBIs, two runs) each recorded two hits. Marley Szymoniak (double, RBI, three runs), Kailyn George (RBI, three runs), Sadie Decker (RBI, three runs) and Lily Parr (two runs) chipped in with a hit apiece. Lesley Lalonde scored three runs.

    Layla Box was the winning pitcher, striking out three and allowing one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Charlotte Box started for Onaway, striking out three and surrendering one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

    Jersey Beauchamp led the Comets with two hits, while Rian Esper had one hit, an RBI and a run scored. Vanessa Groenewoud scored twice and added an RBI. Jersey Beauchamp was the losing pitcher, striking out one and allowing six hits over two innings. Groenewoud pitched two innings, striking out one.

    DeMaestri, who had two more hits, homered again in game two, finished with three RBIs and three runs scored for the Cardinals, who received two hits each from Karsten (RBI) and Parr (four runs). George homered, had three RBIs and scored two runs, Szymoniak added a hit, an RBI and three runs scored, Charlotte Box tripled, tallied an RBI and scored four runs, and Decker doubled and knocked in two runs. Layla Box scored four runs and Hyde scored three.

    Layla Box was the winning pitcher, striking out four and allowing three hits in four innings.

    For the Comets, Jersey Beauchamp recorded a hit and two RBIs, Gracie Beauchamp doubled and scored a run, and Jillian Poumade finished with a hit and a run scored. Julia Short was the losing pitcher, striking out two and allowing nine hits over four innings.

    Schmalzried pitches well, but Hornets swept by Bellaire

    PELLSTON – The Pellston baseball team dropped 1-0 and 7-3 contests to Bellaire in a Ski Valley Conference doubleheader on Monday.

    The Hornets (2-18, 1-13 Ski Valley) received a strong game one pitching display from Jack Schmalzried, who struck out 10 and allowed five hits in six innings of work. Schmalzried and Ethan Hickman each recorded a hit.

    In game two, Schmalzried led Pellston with two hits and two RBIs, while Jack Lane and Sam O’Neil each had a hit and scored a run. Brett Bonter recorded an RBI. Bonter took the loss on the mound, striking out five, scattering seven hits and walking four over five innings.

    Pellston hosts Inland Lakes on Friday.

    Pellston softball drops two to Bellaire

    PELLSTON – The Pellston softball team suffered 8-0 and 28-6 losses to Bellaire in a Ski Valley Conference doubleheader on Monday.

    After recording just two hits in the opener, the Hornets improved offensively in game two. Allie Cameron’s two singles led Pellston, which received a double apiece from Sadie Keck and Sophia Nicholls. Lanie Irwin added a single.

    Pellston faces Inland Lakes at home on Friday.
