    Volleyball roundup: Cheboygan goes unbeaten at Alpena quad; Hornets, Comets start on road

    ALPENA – The 2024 volleyball season got off to an excellent start for the Cheboygan Chiefs , who won all three of their matches at a quad meet in Alpena on Thursday.

    Cheboygan’s wins came against the Wildcats (25-22, 25-15), Rogers City (25-20, 25-16) and Hillman (25-19, 25-14).

    Diem Schley was among the leaders for the Chiefs (3-0), recording a team-high 18 kills and helping with two blocks, while Tessa Lake tallied 16 kills and six aces, Olivia Patrick registered nine kills and 20 digs, Kyleigh Burt picked up nine kills, Makaela Steiner finished with 47 assists and 22 digs, and Presley Chamberlain chipped in with 25 digs.

    “A big contributing factor to their three wins was their serve receive and communication on defense, especially with Presley (Chamberlain) in the back row,” Cheboygan coach Darcie Mlynarchek said. “They were behind the ball and providing Makaela (Steiner) with good passes so that we could run quicker plays. Diem (Schley) and Tessa (Lake) got in a good rhythm hitting in the middle. Overall, it was a great night for the Lady Chiefs.”

    Pellston picks up win in first tournament

    PICKFORD – The Pellston volleyball team played at the Pickford Invitational on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

    Over four games, the Hornets finished 1-1-2, defeating Pickford (25-11, 25-24), splitting with Brimley (25-23, 21-25) and St. Ignace (18-25, 25-16), and losing to Rudyard (17-25, 22-25).

    Lanie Irwin led the Hornets with 22 kills, 17 digs and six aces, while Breanna Willis tallied 37 assists, six kills, 20 digs and eight aces, Allie Cameron had 10 kills, 23 digs and six aces, and Haleigh Bohn added 25 digs and two aces. Aubrey Kewaygeshik (three kills, seven digs), Alivia Pelaccio (nine digs), Sophia Nicholls (three digs, two aces), Erin Kewaygeshik (two digs) and Makenna Cooley (two digs) also contributed for Pellston.

    Mackinaw City opens season at Panther Invitational

    PICKFORD – The Mackinaw City volleyball team started its season at the Pickford Invitational on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

    The Comets (0-3-1) split with Cedarville (21-25, 25-16) but lost to Newberry (13-25, 18-25), St. Ignace (15-25, 20-25) and Superior Central (19-25, 23-25).

    “We had some real bright spots today and found areas that we will need to work on to strengthen our squad to get ready for a tough schedule coming up this season in and out of the conference,” Mackinaw City coach Jake Huffman said. “Most of our sets were very competitive and close, and we will need to learn how to finish and close out our sets to maintain and build momentum moving forward.”

    Leading the way for Mackinaw City was Kerry-Ann Ming, who finished 13 service points, 10 kills, four aces and six blocks, while Vanessa Groenewoud tallied 10 kills, eight points and three aces, and Rian Esper recorded 25 assists, 10 points, four kills and four aces. Other Mackinaw City contributors included Elizabeth Kruczynski (13 points, three aces), Alaia Mendez (nine points, four kills, four aces), Poppy Wallace (five kills, four points), Naomi Knack (three kills) and Julia Short (nine points).
