CHEBOYGAN – We certainly had some great games in the 2023-24 Cheboygan area high school sports season .

Players stepped up, teams found ways to win, and we saw some incredible one-on-one duels as well.

So, with the 2023-24 school year now complete, be sure to cast your vote on what should be the Daily Tribune’s game of the year. The poll opens on Wednesday morning and closes at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 29.

    Here’s the nominees:

Inland Lakes at St. Ignace (8-Player Football Division 1 Regional Final) – This was the ultimate redemption story for the Bulldogs, who overcame a regular season loss to the Saints and captured a thrilling 40-36 victory. Fueling the Bulldogs was quarterback Aidan Fenstermaker, who rushed for three touchdowns and passed for three. The win helped Inland Lakes eventually reach the state title game during a sensational postseason run.

St. Ignace at Cheboygan (Girls Basketball) – This wasn’t your classic high-scoring, up-and-down basketball game, but it sure was compelling from start to finish. Thanks to a clutch 3-pointer from senior Bella Ecker, the Chiefs claimed their first triumph over the Saints since 2015 with a 33-30 home victory. Defense fueled the Chiefs all night against a St. Ignace squad that later reached the regional final.

Onaway vs. St. Ignace (Boys Basketball Division 4 Regional Semifinal) – If you wanted a classic up-and-down, in-your-face showdown, this was it as the Cardinals collided with a dominant St. Ignace squad led by Jonny Ingalls. While the Saints held on for a thrilling 79-74 victory, the Cardinals held their own throughout the night behind a career-high 38 points from Jadin Mix. Ingalls led all scorers with 44.

Onaway vs. Inland Lakes (Baseball Division 4 Regional Final) – The most recent of the classic games we had this season came in Harbor Springs, where the Cardinals stunned their M-68 rivals with a 3-1 regional championship victory. The regional title was the first in history for the Cardinals, who saw Cole Selke deliver a pitching masterpiece and Austin Veal come up with a go-ahead two-run single.
