Little league, travel softball, Northern Michigan Open on tap for Cheboygan summer sports

CHEBOYGAN – The 2023-24 high school sports season is officially in the books.

And yours truly gets a little bit of time to relax and recuperate.

But that doesn’t mean I’m not excited about some events that’ll be happening in Cheboygan this summer . As someone who gets bored easily, I always look forward to covering events that occur in July and early August.

Here’s some of those major events:

    Little league tournaments!

Little league action is great as multiple teams get their opportunities to capture championships and create youth memories in the process.

Thankfully, Cheboygan will host at least two tournaments, with the major boys (10-12) beginning at the recreational fields on Saturday, July 6. Among the area teams include Cheboygan, Tri-Rivers (Indian River) and Onaway.

The following week features the minor girls (8-10) as Cheboygan hosts Tri-Rivers on Saturday, July 13.

    Chaos Clash returns

The Cheboygan Chaos Clash will once again take place this summer, happening July 26-28 at the recreational fields.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, this tournament is an absolute blast to cover. The turnout is even more impressive as teams from across the state join Cheboygan to compete in a unique softball environment.

In 2023, the host Chaos 14-under team defeated the Northern Michigan Legacies in an entertaining championship game. This was high drama from the start as the Chaos came up with several big hits and defensive plays and celebrated with a trophy on their home field.

Tournament organizer Joe Kosanke and others have helped make this one awesome summer event for the kids involved as well as their families, who get the chance to spend a weekend up in beautiful Northern Michigan.

    Northern Michigan Open is coming

Arguably my favorite event of the summer takes place at the Cheboygan Golf & Country Club – the always-exciting Northern Michigan Open.

We’ve had some wild finishes in recent years, with golfers from Cheboygan and beyond looking to capture titles in their respective flights. Oh yeah, they want to have as much fun as possible, too.

After the recent debut of the Northern Michigan Women’s Open, a huge success, this 200-player event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11.

Cheboygan provides an electric environment for this tournament, especially when several spectators are present to see golfers wrap up their rounds on the 18 th hole.

    May the best players win!

    Cheboygan Salmon Tournament

While I don’t always have the chance to attend or take photos at this event, the Cheboygan Salmon Tournament is one of the more exciting times of the year for local anglers.

This year will be no different as anglers start in the morning. Music has been played by Charlie Reager and Billy Jewell in the past, while plenty of people hang out in the big tent after the tournament. It's a ton of fun for all ages.

This year, the Salmon Tournament is Saturday, Aug. 3.

    Enjoy summer, people!
