CHEBOYGAN – The upgrades keep on coming for Cheboygan High School athletics .

Now, Western Avenue Field, home of the Cheboygan Chiefs football team , has gotten in on the action as a new scoreboard, sponsored by Cheboygan Citizens National Bank, was unveiled on Tuesday as part of the changes going on in the athletic program.

“I got an opportunity, between (Cheboygan Booster Club treasurer and CNB employee Sharon Coppernoll) and (Cheboygan High School athletic director Jason Friday), and they let me know that the football sign was in disarray and needing some love, and Jason said, ‘Hey, your name’s been on there for 30 years. Would you have an interest in helping us keep the sign going?’ and I instantaneously said, ‘Yes, I would,’” Cheboygan CNB president and CEO Matthew Keane said. “It’s so exciting to keep Citizens National Bank as a sponsor for this proud football field sign, so I’m very proud of it.”

Being a major sponsor of Cheboygan athletics, Keane and CNB are more than thrilled to continue what’s been a positive relationship between both parties.

“The thing that was important for me and from the bank’s position was that the school has always been a great partner for us, and I just wanted to continue to show our support for them,” Keane said. “Sharon’s (Coppernoll) been a huge champion for the sports boosters, and we got the wrestling mats and just a lot of other things that are important to the school system. If we can do stuff like this to help with the new facilities, what a great opportunity.

“It’s an amazing friendship, and I appreciate the decades of working together.”

With a new scoreboard in place, it’s another item checked off the list for Cheboygan athletics, who continue to change things around this summer. As far as other upgrades go, Cheboygan’s High School Gymnasium will see improvements to its bleachers, locker rooms and showers, a major boost for the athletic community.

As for the scoreboard, Friday said it was a total team effort between the school and CNB.

“First of all, I want to thank Matthew (Keane), Sharon and everyone at Citizens National Bank for the great donation,” Friday said. “I know Citizens were very thankful that they’re in our community and always willing to give back to the schools and other organizations. I graduated in 1992, and Citizens National Bank has not just been for this scoreboard, but when you look around town, you look around our facilities, you see Citizens National Bank all over, and they’re truly a bank that supports the entire community, and we’re just very thankful to have them here."
