CHEBOYGAN — McLaren Northern Michigan, which operates a hospital campus in Cheboygan, is supporting the proposed Cheboygan Commons development project led by developer Bob Pulte.

"Our Northern Michigan communities are highly attractive to people across the region. Cheboygan continues to grow as a destination location in Northern Michigan, and this project will only add to the appeal," Gar Atchison, president and CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan, said in a statement.

Cheboygan Commons is a $50 million project that would occupy a 14-acre site along Main Street that houses the shuttered Tissue Depot paper mill. The property also includes an adjacent site across the street from the mill that contained a warehouse which was destroyed by a fire last year.

Pulte's proposal includes housing on the former warehouse site and clearing out the paper mill. For the mill site along the Cheboygan River, the project calls for upscale housing with both on- and off-water condominiums, a riverfront restaurant, a boutique style hotel, commercial space for retail or offices and a small special events center.

Atchison said the Pulte family has been an asset to Northern Michigan for many years through their philanthropicprojects.

"Their sincere intention to enhance our communities is evident. We are dedicated to serving the health care needs of the Cheboygan community. We support any project that strengthens the city by improving its infrastructure and increasing its visibility throughout the state. We continue to explore plans to increase and expand our health care offerings in the Cheboygan location. Growth like this project will aid in that expansion," said Atchison.
