    July 18, 1924: Cheboygan largest fishing port on the entire Great Lakes

    Cheboygan is one of the greatest points for shipping fresh fish on the entire chain of Great Lakes in fact, few cities excel it in the tonnage exported as it covers a field of its own on account of the shipping facilities offered by rail to the great markets of the United States, New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. Fish shipped from this point reach the New York market in less than forty-eight hours as they go by express in refrigerator cars.

    This quick service has been brought about by the big dealers who are met by the New York Central lines which give them the best possible service. This draws to Cheboygan all the fish caught within a radius of eighty miles and which covers the best fishing grounds on fresh waters. It covers whitefish, trout, yellows, chubs, herring, in fact all kinds of the finny species inhabiting the waters of the Great Lakes, as it is the natural spawning grounds. Engaged in this work of handling the large output are about thirty tugs of all sizes, operated by steam and gasoline which reach out into Canadian waters.

    On account of the shipping facilities afforded by Cheboygan the industry has increased from year to year until it is now firmly established as the largest dealer in the United States.

    The large increase in the business is told in an interview with R. J. Bell, one of the largest shippers in Cheboygan and the best informed on the subject. He says that the output this year will exceed that of 1923 by twenty per cent. From the middle of June up to the present time about forty tons of fish have been handled here weekly and the average for the season of 1924 will be about thirty tons. Mr. Bell figures that output this season will be about 1200 tons, which includes all kinds of fish. This means that the dealers will pay out the men actually engaged in taking the fish from the water the sum of $182,000.00 In other words, this is the amount paid to the producers who leave the major portion right here in Cheboygan.

    Mr. Bell also stated that the increase in the output is due, in a great measure, to the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries which planted freely in these waters, and there would be still better conditions if there was a uniformity of laws in the states bordering on the Great Lakes.

    July 19, 1974: Girls Little League ends season with Pizza Girls champs

    In the final league game of the Girls Little League schedule July 10 Douglas Insurance defeated Papa Fabrini Pizzas 17-15.

    Pitchers for Douglas Insurance were Liz Daughtery and Sue Farmer with Sue Farmer getting the win.

    Douglas Insurance had 8 hits. Batting leaders for Douglas were Sue Olson with 2 singles and 1 double and Michelle Farmer with 2 singles. Other girls credited with singles were Teri Gerard, Sue Farmer and Tina Chevalier.

    Douglas Insurance is managed by Maggie Daughtery.

    Tammy Post pitched the complete game for the Pizzas, taking the loss.

    Papa Fabrini Pizzas had 13 hits in a losing effort. Batting leaders were Cheryl Kester with a single, double, and a triple and Leah Yeck and Linda McCarry each with 2 singles. Other girls with singles were Mary Schoch, Sally Schoch, Kathy Gartner, Sandy Fisher and Chris Bancroft.

    Despite the loss Papa Fabrini’s won the championship with a 7 and 2 record. Pizzas are managed by Margaret Kester and coached by Linda Lyon.

    In the second game Kiwanis Club defeated B & C 7-5. Winning pitcher for Kiwanis was Elaine Armantrout with Laura Dodd taking the loss.

    Kiwanis had 4 hits while B & C had 8 hits. Leading leaders for B & C were Kim Wandrie with a home run, Mindy Maybanks with a single and double and Missy Maybanks with 2 singles. Girls with singles were Lori Williams, Cammy Maxwell, Kelley Woolhiser and Teri Spray.

    Kiwanis is managed by Helen Armantrout and coached by Pat Mason. Manager for B & C is Pat Bur with Joann Blaskowski coaching.
