CHEMUNG, N.Y. ( WETM ) — If you’ve been meaning to get your pet vaccinated against rabies, now’s the time.

The Chemung County Health Department is holding a free rabies clinic in the Town of Chemung between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. Pet owners who register in advance through Chemung County’s website can bring their animals to the Chemung Town Hall, located at 48 Rotary Road Ext., at their scheduled appointment time.

Each person can bring up to three dogs, cats, and/or ferrets to be vaccinated and must answer questions about each animal while registering. Animals must be at least three months old to be vaccinated. If an animal has been vaccinated for rabies before, the owner can bring proof to get a three-year certificate for their pet. All pets must be on a leash or in a carrier and be under the control of a responsible adult.

All cats, dogs, and ferrets legally must be vaccinated against rabies, and owners with unvaccinated animals can be fined. If your pet needs to be vaccinated and you can’t make Chemung County’s next clinic, you can check the county’s website at a later date to see when the next clinic is scheduled or click on a link to see when neighboring counties have free rabies clinics. All of these clinics are open to everyone, not just county residents.
