CHENANGO, N.Y. ( WIVT/WBGH ) — The Town of Chenango is going to be getting an upgrade in sewer and water infrastructure.

$2,000,000 in federal funding is going towards a project to revamp the Town of Chenango’s waste water treatment facility and infrastructure.

The funding was secured by Republican Congressman Marc Molinaro in the Fiscal Year appropriations bill.

Mike Lumsden, Town Supervisor, says the upgrades mean shorter downtimes for residents, easier repairs, and finally bringing the town’s water equipment up to DEC and EAP regulations.

Lumsden says upgrading the facilities has been a goal for a while, but was delayed by Covid and increasing costs.

“We have many breakdowns, many pump failures and things like that because pumps and equipment are very outdated and old,” says Lumsden. “We’re constantly trying to put…sure them up, fix them up, to get services to the residents of this town.”

Molinaro says projects in sewer management typically cost more, since New York State law dictates that only those who directly benefit can share the cost.

The project is expected to cost 44 million dollars.
