A self-storage facility is coming to southwest Cherokee County.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Feb. 20 to approve a special use permit request from Robert Kriz to build a climate-controlled self-storage facility on almost four acres located just south of the Highway 92 and Wade Green Road intersection.

"With the residential growth in this area, this is needed and something that will be utilized," Commissioner Corey Ragsdale said.

Commissioners also approved a request from the applicant to eliminate a deceleration lane from Wade Green Road to "eliminate perceived confusion for drivers traveling north on Wade Green who may turn into the deceleration lane for the site thinking they are turning right onto Highway 92," county documents show. The applicant also requested to eliminate the required 30-foot buffer, which was approved.

The building will be two stories with a basement. According to county documents, the building is expected to be about 33,750 square feet, with a gross square footage of about 101,250.

Kriz told officials in the application that the hours of operation will be limited from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Primary access to the property will be on Wade Green Road. Five parking spaces are planned for the facility.
