A lifelong resident of Cherokee county, Bill Wells, passed away on June 26, 2024, on his 97th birthday, at his home in Crestline. He was born on a rural farm in 1927 to Fred and Daisy Mae Wells. He joined the US Army Air Corps and served during WWII in Alaska helping maintain C-47 aircraft.
Galena Man Found Guilty in Murder Trial
A Cherokee County Jury returns its verdict following a three day murder trial. 50-year-old Billy Barker, of Galena, was found guilty of first degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm and criminal carrying of a weapon. On April 18, 2023, Barker shot and killed 27-year-old Levi Porter, of Riverton, in the 800 block of North Columbus Street in Galena. The homicide investigation was conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Galena Police Department.
Three day murder trial ends – Galena man convicted
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — A Galena man is convicted of first degree murder for killing a young Riverton man last April. After a three day trial it took a Cherokee County Jury about an hour to return with a guilty verdict against Billy Barker, 50, for shooting and killing Levi Porter, 27, on April 18, 2023.

Newton County, MO – Some 4-staters are cleaning up the damage left by overnight storms. A line of storms broke through our area early yesterday morning leaving some people without power. Tree limbs and debris are scattered across residential streets. There have been no reports of injuries, but crews and residents have been working all day trying to get things back to normal.
